Friday’s Event Points: Mid-East Alliance 2.5, Known World Alliance 0.5
War Points: Known World Alliance 2, Mid-East Alliance 1

The final day of battle at Pennsic War XXXVIII saw history take place at the Midrealm and East Kingdom joined forces in two champions’ battles before the final large melee in the fort.

Combined Unbelted Battle
After decades of fierce combat against each other, the unbelted champions of the East and Midrealm joined forces Friday against a force of champions from the Allied Kingdoms. The Midrealm and East each fielded 60 unbelted warriors to do battle with 120 allies.
The fight was as hard as it was decisive. Forces from the East charged the Allies left flank and blew it open, while the Midrealm’s forces chewed through their opposition. The training of the East and Midrealm paid off, as they were able to reform more quickly and sweep the field in short order.

Combined Belted Battle
HRM Andreas of the East told the unbelted champions he hoped he could duplicate their success during the belted champions battle
HRM Andreas and HRM EikBrandr of the Midrealm joined a force of 40 Chivalry champions on the field to face 42 belted champions from the Allied Kingdoms.
Again, the cohesion of the Midrealm and East’s forces proved decisive in this fight. Whole forces of Tyger and Dragon champions rolled over the field, sweeping their foes before them. In the end, the Mid-East forces eliminated Duke Lars of Northshield, Duke Valharic of Atlantia and Sir Richard Wulfwood of Calontir to complete the rout.

Helm’s Deep Battle
The final big fight of war took place in and around the Pennsic fort. This battle was fought over six banners around the fort, with the defenders having one resurrection and the attackers having three resurrections.
Each battle was scheduled for 30 minutes, with possession of the banners checked at 10 minutes, 20 minutes and the end of the battle. The side with more banners after both fights would win.
The Known World Allies defended the fort first. Northshield and its mercenary allies guard the east gate, while Ealdormere held the center of the fort. Forces from Atlantia, Æthelmearc and Calontir stationed themselves outside the fort to the east.
At the sound of the cannon, the Mid-East’s strategy was clear. The Tyger and Dragon sent token forces to occupy the east gate of the fort while focusing the bulk of its efforts on sweeping the banners outside and taking the north gate.
The move proved effective as forces from the Northern army turned the flank of the Allies and started a general retreat among Allied forces back towards the fort.
From there, House Darkmoon occupied the west gate, while the Unsterblichen and Oaken armies led a grinding assault on the north gate.
The allies threw almost everything they had at the north gate to stop the push, but the tide of Mid-East warriors proved impossible to stem. Soon, HRM Andreas was leading the Mid-East’s forces through the north gate, while House Darkmoon punched through the west gate not long after.
From there, the rout was on as Mid-East forces relentlessly pushed east. Around the 17-minute mark, the cannon sounded to end the battle. The banner count was 15-3 in favor of the Mid-East after one battle.
The Mid-East commanders made a strategic decision before the second fight took place. Since they needed only to hold the three banners inside the fort for 20 minutes to win the battle, they decided not to deploy any forces outside the fort.
Thus, the Southern army was sent to hold the east gate and the whole of the Midrealm army deployed to the west. The Unsterblichen and Northern army, backed up by the Huskarls, forced a kill-pocket defense in front of the north gate.
Early on, it looked as if the strategy would work as wave after wave of Atlantians fell in the kill-pocket. However, the Allies’ numerical advantage slowly began to show, as they pushed the pocket back.
When the forces were pushed back to the north gate, the Tuchux used the opening to run around the back of the fort and joined a push by Ealdormere on the east gate.
After a final hold, the breaches on the east and north gates turned into a rout. At battle’s end, it seemed the whole of the Allies’ army had surrounded a small force of Midrealm warriors at the West’s banner.
The cannon sounded to end the battle. It took the Allies longer to sweep the fort than the Mid-East forces, but they still accomplished it in less than 20 minutes. That meant the banner count was 15-3 for the Allies in the second battle, which tied the battle and split the event point.
HRM EikBrandr said he was pleased with this Pennsic war, regardless of the outcome.
“We’re absolutely, 100 percent thrilled,” EikBrandr said. “With the camaraderie and new friendships we have made this War, we have seen the fruition of all that we had hoped.”
Saturday’s big battle: The flight of dragons through the gate!
As always, HUZZAH, VIVAT, HOOBAH and WASSAIL to the warriors and warrior watchers of the Known World. May we all meet again at Pennsic XXXIX.
