EMS company given charge of Chirurgeon’s Point

By Peregrine Fairchylde

As of early Saturday morning, Pennsic 35 Mayor Baroness Mistress Brise Sanguin has placed Chirurgeon’s Point under the management of NorthWest EMS service of McKees Rock, Penn. First aid services are still available to all War participants free of charge, 24 hours a day, just “under new management,” according to the War’s media liaison, Master Corun MacAnndra.

The exact reason that theWar Chirurgeon and the chirurgeonate staff is no longer running the Point remained undisclosed Saturday afternoon. Responding to written questions submitted through Master Corun, Pennsic 35 Mayor Baroness Mistress Brise Sanguin on Saturday declined to elaborate at that time as to why the changes were made at Chirurgeon’s Point, but did say that no particular SCA policy or procedure was violated to precipitate the action, and that all proper policies and procedures were followed.

Richard Lenhart of NorthWest EMS, a paramedic with six years of experience, said late Saturday morning that the Point will essentially be run the same way it has been: Gentles simply walk in and tell the medical staff what’s wrong.

“We typically have three medics and at least two EMTs (emergency medical technicians)” on duty at all times, said Lenhart. “There will be up to two or three physicians (at the Point) during daylight hours.”

Minor ailments will be dealt with on-site, and patients with serious problems will be taken by ambulance to local hospitals, as has been the practice in the past.

“As far as emergency care, it’s not going to change,” Lenhart said.

One of the primary concerns he said people have brought to the EMS staff was whether NorthWest would have ready access to the confidential medical information that many Pennsic participants have filed with the Point.

“We are not seeing that,” Lenhart assured. “That’s under lock and key and we do not have access.”

If there is a medical need that requires that information, he added, the EMS staff will contact the Pennsic Mayor’s office.
“We can still, in an emergency, get the information from the mayor,” he said.

Lenhart also said that the EMS staff will accept volunteers to assist at the Point, although they will be asked to wear mundane clothes instead of garb.

“We’re already working through thats,” he said. “They will assist us with the minor stuff – basically like it was.”

However, Lenhart said no decision had yet been made about whether apprentice chirurgeons will still be able to continue their training at the War.

“That will have to be something taken up with the Mayor,” he said

Finally, Lenhart said that the EMS staff cannot answer questions about the change, and that those should be directed to the Pennsic Mayor’s staff.

Feat of Arms Planned

Greetings from the Main Event Stewards for Great Western War X

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce that Prado Park has had a major utility failure. Please be assured that this happened a few days ago and is simply the result of old equipment and wiring. There are no indications that there was any tampering or foul play. The repairs required are so extensive that they will dramatically impact our use of the site. This information, coupled with a huge price increase, has forced us to cancel our plans to use Prado Park for GWW 10. We ask that you DO NOT contact the Prado Park Staff. They are frantically trying to make temporary repairs and deal with park guests and residents. They can’t be answering the phone.

What this means for GWW 10: We are left with only seven weeks before the set up weekend of September 30th-Octobar 1st. The Stewards, with the agreement of the Caidan Kingdom Seneschal, have decided that IF we can find another site by September 1st, we MAY be able to proceed with the event for this year. Please be patient while we adjust to this situation.

REFUND POLICY: For the time being we will be holding all pre-registrations until at least September 1st when the final decisions are made about the event. Once we know exactly what will happen we will make announcements regarding our refund process. Please be patient.

Gavin and I are heartbroken to have to make this announcement and we want to assure everyone that we will do everything in our power to find an alternative site. We are asking everyone to PLEASE be patient while we struggle to adjust.

For further announcements, go to http://www.caid-gww.org/

Mayor: Chirurgeons overstepping certifications reason for change at Point

By Peregrine Fairchylde

The questions were pointed and sometimes angry, and the responses did not always satisfy the crowd, but tempers remained largely in check during an hour-long public meeting held Wednesday afternoon by Pennsic 35 Mayor Baroness Brise Sanguin, OP, outside the First Aid Pavilion, formerly Chirurgeon’s Point.

And in response to the foremost question on the minds of many there– exactly what had transpired to cause the mayor to turn over operation of the Point to NorthWest EMS – though Mayor Brise remained unspecific on the details, citing privacy issues, she did say that some chirurgeons at the War had “exceeded [the] authority” of their mundane first aid certifications, which had given her “grave concerns” and led to the action.

“We had gotten to the point it wasn’t one or two people,” she said. “It was chronic.”

At that point, Viscountess Kaellyn mac Dermott, who was the War Chirurgeon for Pennsic 35 and is now coordinator of first aid volunteers for the War, added: “It’s because I couldn’t police it fast enough to answer their concerns.”

Starting at 1 p.m., Mayor Brise and Viscount Viscount Edward Zifran of Gendy, the emergency deputy mayor, took more than 30 questions over a little more than an hour from a crowd that started at about three dozen but ultimately swelled to more than 75 gentles, most of whom appeared to be chirurgeons: Red hats, leeches and fleams were abundant. Despite the heat, the crowd stayed almost undiminished until the mayor ended the session shortly after 2 p.m.

Judging by the crowd’s reaction, the most promising answer provided by the mayoral staff was to an inquiry as to whether the reports regarding the incidents that led to Mayor Brise’s decision could be released after having confidential personal information removed from them.

“You’ve brought up a good point,” said Viscount Edward. “Allow her some time to actually give this thought and consult with some folks and consider this possibility.”

Mayor Brise also reported that the personal medical information that had been removed from the Point previously was back in the hands of Viscountess Kaellyn.

After the meeting, Master Caelin on Andrede, OP, of Ansteorra, the Deputy Society Chirurgeon, said the records had been removed and placed in his possession according to procedure laid out in the Society Chirurgeon’s Handbook and no request had been made to him for those records until late Tuesday night, at about 10:50 p.m.

During the public session the question “Why?” was brought up again and again.

“Now that you have put 10,000-plus people at risk, can you please explain the reason so the rumors stop and we all have a clue?” asked Master El of Two Knives.

“I have not put anyone at risk,” responded Mayor Brise. “We have EMS taking care of triage … we are fully staffed, we have doctors, we have paramedics, we have first aid people.”

The other major question that, judging by crowd reaction, was not satisfactorily answered dealt with the question of liability protection for warranted chirurgeons who volunteer as first aid helpers, the U.S. Volunteer Protection Act, and Pennsylvania’s Good Samaritan law. While the mayor and her emergency deputy both insisted the protections were in place, some in the crowd contested that position. Viscount Edward asked one questioner to provide a copy of the U.S. Volunteer Protection Act so it could be reviewed and a more satisfactory answer provided.

Mark the Faceitous, a heavy fighter and chirurgeon who identified himself as a mundane family practice physician, said that “we’ve always appreciated having EMS back up the chirurgeons,” but asked the mayor if she was comfortable having non-SCA persons providing first aid, given the unique issues the chirurgeonate is used to dealing with, such as armor extraction.

“We are in a different position than the mundane world,” he said.

“Yes,” Mayor Brise responded to whether she was confident in the ability of NorthWest to handle such situations. “We have SCA individuals involved in this.”

Another gentle asserted that, as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the SCA and the Pennsic War were subject to the federal Freedom of Information law, and that minutes of meetings – such as any that led up to the announcement that EMS would run Chirurgeon’s Point – must be made available to the public. Viscount Edward countered that, saying that such minutes “would be under executive session,” and thus exempt from disclosure.

The question of money donated to the Chirurgeonate Fund was raised, and Mayor Brise said that money would carry over to next year’s War to be used to purchase supplies, as was usual practice. This prompted a query as to whether the chirurgeonate would be in charge of the Point again next year, to which the mayor replied, “That’s up to next Pennsic’s mayor,” Baroness Rosamund Beauvisage.

Another gentle asked whether NorthWest EMS was reimbursing Pennsic for supplies they use that had been purchased for the War; she said that anything they used was being replaced. Master Iustinos Tekton, called Justin, a former War Chirurgeon, added that supplies were purchased for the war with money already part of the event’s general revenue, and further that he had no problem with the EMS personnel using the supplies on hand.

Mayor Brise also told the crowd that no additional money was being paid to NorthWest under the contract they have with the War.

A question about whether chirurgeons in training (CITs) would be allowed to work shifts during the war led to some brief confusion. Viscount Edward has replied to the gentle that, “We’ll have to take that up with the senior chirurgeon staff.” But this prompted another question: “Is there a cirurgeon staff?”

“Here is the thing,” His Excellency replied. “Yes, there is no active chirurgeonate on site. That does not mean you’re not warranted chirurgeons. There is not active chirurgeonate activity. Whatever rules and procedures you folks have are still in effect.”

“[But] not as an organized part of the Pennsic staff,” added Mayor Brise.

Toward the end of the meeting, Lord Yehuda ben Maimon, who has worked as a chirurgeon at Pennsic the past 10 years, pointed out that the mere fact so many gentles showed up to the meeting was a good sign.

“The whole reason you’re here in the heat is because you care,” he said. “I think we all came here because we want the answers and unfortunately we can’t have them today.... We all want to make that decision ourselves, but we have to ceded that authority to the mayor.”

Then, turning to Mayor Brise, he entreated, “Please promise there will be more information later.” In response, she said she could only promise to try and get more information out.

After the meeting, Viscountess Kaellyn said she felt that first aid service was going “very, very well” under the new arrangement.

“The EMS and the doctors have been working like demons. I worship every one of them,” she said. “They’ve been doing far more than they were expected to do here.”

But though she has some volunteer first aid helpers, she said she would very much like to have a dozen more to get through the end of the war.

“We can figure out what happened and what could have happened better after Pennsic,” Her Excellency said. “Right now, we need to concentrate on giving first aid to the populace. I understand completely what the chirurgeons feel – I’m one of them. And I don’t feel [ill will] against any of them if they don’t feel they can come back. But I would like to see some of them work out the differences and come in and help us out until the end of the event.”

Deputy Society Chirurgeon Caelin said in an interview after the meeting that he differed with Mayor Brise’s interpretation of the Society Chirurgeon’s Handbook when it came to the authority to remove the chirurgeonate from operating at the War.

“What it [the handbook] says is you can have an event with no chirurgeonate,” he said. “It doesn’t say you can remove the chirurgeonate.”

He cited section III.9, General Policies, which reads in part: “Any Chirurgeon who is available and willing to provide first aid at an event can not be prohibited from doing so by anyone other than the Kingdom Chirurgeon or a duly-delegated administrative superior in the Chirurgeonate (e.g., a Chirurgeon-in-Charge at an interkingdom event).”

“They’re choosing very small segments out of context,” Master Caelin said.

The Last Word

The Last Pennsic

It is amazing to me that every year Pennsic gets bigger. The roads get longer, the hills steeper the temperature is hotter. My tent is heavier and takes me longer to put up. I get tired quicker and nap a lot. Is Pennsic changing? No. I am getting older.

Welcome to being fifty.

We are all getting older, sadly. As the saying goes, you hang around long enough it is bound to happen. Every year I see good friends who for one reason or another will not be back. It would take but a couple of turns of bad luck for any of us to fall by the wayside. I know it is the natural way of things but still I am unhappy about it. We will make new friends but the missing will always hold a place in our hearts.

Lords and Ladies!

Charge your glasses and raise them high!

To our friends…today’s and yesterday’s.

“If we shadows have offended,

Think but this and all is mended,

That you have but slumber’d here

While these visions did appear.

And this weak and idle theme,

No more yielding but a dream,

Gentles, do not reprehend:

If you pardon, we will mend.

And, as I am an honest Puck,

If I have unearned luck

Now to scrape the serpent’s tongue,

We will make amends ere long;

Else the Puck a liar call;

So, good night unto all.

Give me your hands, if we be friends,

And Robin shall restore amends.”

Thank you, William. See you all next year.

Yours in the DREAM…

Og

PI Publishing Court Reports This Year

One of the additions we at the Pennsic Independent would like to make this year is the inclusion of kingdom court reports. We know this is something that our readers—both at war and on the Internet—would be particularly interested in.

In order to do this, we are going to be requesting help from the kingdoms themselves. We will be in touch with royalty and kingdom heralds to help us get this information. Since courts are in the evening, we will not be able to include the information in the following day's edition, but we will get them into the paper—and on the web—as quickly as possibly.

We will also be asking help from kingdom residents at Pennsic as well. If you are willing to collect and deliver the awards given in your kingdom's court to us by noon the following day, please contact us at The Pennsic Independent (Newspaper on the Merchant Map).

We do have staff members who will be attending their own kingdom courts and reporting on them. These courts include the East Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, Aethelmearc, and Ealdormere. We are actively seeking volunteer court reporters from all other kingdoms.

Court Reports

Even before the first formal courts of the war were held, several kingdoms elevated members of their populace or already had sent prople out of peerage vigils.

The first award of the war came during the first week, at Viscount Haakon’s bardic circle when King Malcolm and Queen Tessa ofÆthelmearc made Haakon’s brother, Boris Dragonslayer, a baron of their court.

Earlier this week, prior to the Rapier Town Battle, the Æthelmearc royalty elevated Illadore de Bedegrayne of the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, to the Order of the White Scarf.

King Felix and Queen Madeleina of the Midrealm sent three people on Pelican vigil prior to their Thursday court. They are Caelan O’Rogallary of the incipient shire of al Ja’Far, Ciara McRobbie of Northwoods, and Baron Rocco Barbarossa of the Barony of Roaring Wastes.

The Midrealm also has two new members of the Order of Chivalry .

Angus of Darkmoon and Axle Fairhair were placed on vigil on the field just after the Unbelted Champions Battle. Sir Angus was knighted before the Woods Battle and Sir Axle was knighted before the castle battle.

After Monday’s fighting, three Easterners received the Order of the Tygers Combatant, the kingdom Higher Order of Merit for fighting. They were Eloi Albelard of the Barony of the Bridge, Baron Angus Kerr of Conocrdia of the Snows and Dietrich Schwelgengraber.

In addition, King Brion and his queen also sent two members of their kingdom on vigil for Chivalry. They are Christian Knox and Alexander de Hauteville.

At Æthelmearc Court on Tuesday there were two elevations to the peerage and one other gentle was placed on vigil. Valgardr Gunnarson was elevated to the Order of the Laurel.

Baron Cedric the Humble, who just last month stepped down as Baron of Thescorre, was elevated to the Order of the Pelican.

After court had been suspended, HRM Malcolm recalled His Silver Buccle Principal Herald, Baroness Giulietta da Venezia, and placed her on vigil for the Order of the Pelican. She will be elevated at the Festival of Summer’s End in the Canton of Beau Fleuve next month.

Also of note, the late Master Johan von Traubenberg was named the 21st Jewel of Æthelmearc. Æthelmearc Court is remaining open throughout the War.

At Ealdormere Court on Thursday evening, Eleanor Fairchild was elevated to the Order of the Laurel by TRMs Aaron and Rustique. Also, THLady Joanna of Northumberland was made a Baroness of the Court.

Belted Champions Battle

This year’s belted champions battle may have been the most competitive and chivalrous in Pennsic history. Twenty knight champions from the East and Midrealm met each other on the field and the result was a rollicking affair. After a hold was called to allow dead fighters out, five Midrealm fighters and three East fighters remained on the battlefield, though four of the five Midrealm fighters were confined to their knees.

For the next 15 minutes, those fighters left everything on the field, as chants of “East” and “Tyger” clashed with chants of “Midrealm” and “Draco” from a very enthusiastic crowd. In the end, Duke Edmund of Hertford was the last fighter from the Midrealm. HRH Lucan on the East dispatched him.

Both of Their Majesties had high praise for the champions.

“This is what champions should be,” HRM Felix said. “This was a fight fully of chivalry and honor.”

“In all my years at Pennsic, I have seen a fight like this,” HRM Brion said. “I know not if we will see a fight like this again.”

Plate and Mail Tournament

The Historic Combat Series continued Thursday with the Plate and Mail Tournament. Fighters were assigned a number of counted blows depending on how much plate armor they carried. Victory was achieved by striking that number of good blows or thrusting into a vulnerable point.

Seven fighters participated in the tournament and Viscount Geoffrey Scott of the West went a perfect 6-0 in the round robin tournament to claim the title.

Calontir Greatsword Tournament

HRM Semjaka of Calontir hosted his kingdom’s Greatsword Tournament Tuesday afternoon. A total of 23 fighters came out to battle in this double elimination tournament with two-handed swords.

In the end, Sir Brusi Anderson of the Shetlands, a Lochac knight, defeated Calontir’s Duke Irel Krisk of Starre Inn two bouts to one in the final. HRM Semjaka then offered a 14th century greatsword to Sir Brusi as token of his victory, but Sir Brusi requested it be held by His Majesty and named a token for every future champion.

Known World Squires Tournament

The Kingdom of Atlantia hosted the fifth annual Known World Squires Tournament and 91 squires from throughout the Known World came to the list. The list was fought as a double elimination Atlantian speed tournament.

This tournament has been dominated in recent years from squires of House Ebonwoulf in Atlantia and one their household made the finals again. However, Russell Gilnel Tabere needed two win two bouts against Kane Severus of An Tir to take the title, as Lord Tabere came from the loser’s list. Tabere won the first bout, but Severus won the second to claim the title.

Tyger forces roar over field

After 11 War Points: East Tygers 8, Midrealm Dragons 3

After a day of cooperation, the Grand Armies of the Midrealm and East got back to competition Thursday as the two armies met for the grand spectacle that is the field battle.

This year’s throwdown on the field would involve two fights, each worth one War Point. Combat archery was allowed in the second battle.

The two sides lined up on their traditional starting points with the Midrealm on the east side of the field and East attacking from the west side of the field.

The Dragon’s forces arrayed themselves with the Tuchux and South Oaken and allied kingdoms to the north; the Great Dark Horde, Ealdormere, Calontir and Darkmoon in the center; and Darkyard, Ironwolf, North Oaken and Lochac to the south.

The East lined up with Atlantia and Rome to the north; Æthelmearc, the Southern and Central Armies in the center; and the Northern Army and other allied kingdoms to the south.

At the sound of the cannon, more than 1,000 fighters charged into the fray. Darkyard went on a mad dash on the extreme southern flank, while the Tuchux did the same on the northern edge of the field. However, both charges eventually ran out of steam and manpower. Meanwhile, East forces in the center created large bulges in the Midrealm line, leading to an untenable position for many Midrealm fighters and allies. At the end of the first fight, the East’s forces in the center had the Midrealm’s forces completely encircled and ground them down. Meanwhile, remnants of House Bloodguard and Rome mopped up the remaining forces to the north. When two forces met in the north center of the battlefield, the cannon sounded, signifying an East victory.

The second fight turned out to be much more a battle of attrition. Whole units from both armies were chewed up in a meatgrinder in the center of the battlefield. In the end, elements of Black Talon and Rome were able to survive the melee and score a victor over the last few remaining Midrealm hardcores.

HRM Brion assembled his jubilant forces and asked his army raise cheers to each and every one of his allies after the battle. HRM Brion thanked the East for their prowess, but was quick to give credit his opponents as well.

“Honor these ladies and gentlemen across the field who met you so valiantly this day,” HRM Brion said. “Without their great prowess we would have nothing to do.”

After the battles, however, it was clear the fighting was not done. The army of Ealdormere marched to the center of the battlefield and threw down a challenge to the East’s Northern Army. This was accepted and the White Wolf met the Northern Star in three rounds of combat, with the Spartans and House Darkmoon joining in the fun.

Today’s big battle: The Broken Field Battle

The Broken Field has a new spin on it this year. As the Midrealm is trailing, they will be given the opportunity to take the field first construct whatever obstacles they can create. The East will then have 60 minutes to destroy the Midrealm army. If they are unsuccessful, the Midrealm takes the final two points. There will be no resurrections.

What to watch for: Unique wall and bridge formations. Much like the town battle, this battle may take some figuring out in its early stages. The onus is on the East to win the battle as the attacker.

Pennsic Date change

By Master Liam St. Liam

For the Pennsic Independent

Pennsic always changes from year to year, and the most obvious change for Pennsic XXXVI will be its starting date.

As announced earlier this summer, next year’s Pennsic will start on Friday, July 27 and will run through Sunday, August 12. Baroness Rosamunde Beausivage, next year’s Mayor, made the formal announcement following a meeting of the seneschals of the East, Middle and Æthelmearc and representative of Cooper’s Lake Campground..

The main reasoning behind the change is the early start of school in a number of southern and midwestern states, which causes problems for parents and for SCA members who are teachers or work in other aspects of education. For parents in place like Trimaris and parts of Calontir, the early school start meant only one week of Pennsic – or no Pennsic at all. At least one former member of the Board of Directors, Mistress Elasait of Calontir, has missed Pennsic at time because of the school calendar in her home kingdom of Calontir.

“I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear about the change,” said Lady Seichel von Halstern of the East Kingdom, who is leaving today for a college orientation. “This way, it’s not going to mess me up for the next five years.”

Almost everyone interviewed about the date change either supported it or did not have a strong opinion either way. A few people said they might have to rearrange their July schedules but thought it would not be a major problem.

Prior to Pennsic, the decision produced a rather heated discussion on the East Kingdom Internet mailing list, partly because it had not been discussed publicly. Most of those in other kingdoms said there were not too many complaints.

There will have to be some changes in events in some kingdoms. Æthelmearc may be unable to continue its demo for the Hawk Creek Nature Preserve, and the July event schedule in the East Kingdom will have to be adjusted because the traditional date for Southern region War Camp in Eisental. That event is usually scheduled for the weekend that Pennsic will start next year. Several other kingdoms already do not have major events scheduled in July.

Combat of the Thirty

Immediately following Opening Ceremonies, nearly 60 of the Known World’s finest warriors assembled to stage a recreation of the Combat of the Thirty of the Hundred Years War. Duchess Eanor of Amberhall of the Middle Kingdom led the English, while Sir Nigel MacFarlane of Ealdormere led the French.

Each fighter brought several ransoms to the field in the event they were captured. Fighters could be captured by taking three poleax blows to the head and then led to the opposing side’s banner. Fighters could only be killed by a thrust to a vulnerable spot in their armor. In the event the fighter was killed, his entire ransom stash would be “looted.”

While the English side did manage to ransom a few French fighters, the French were overwhelming in the end and won in a rout. Next year, the English will be captained by Duke Yngvar the Dismal of Æthelmearc, while the French will be led by Sir Kieran MacLoud of the Midrealm.

Inter-Kingdom Unbelted Melee Team Tournament

The Kingdom of Ealdormere hosted the third annual Inter-Kingdom Unbelted Melee Team Tournament around noon Sunday. Seven teams of 15 fighters from across the Known World engaged in a round robin tournament with the two top finishers battling it out for the championship in the end. Results from the round robin were: Midrealm 6-0; Atlantia 5-1; _thelmearc 4-2; Ealdormere 3-3; Atenveldt 2-4; Trimaris 1-5; and Lochac 0-6.

The Midrealm and Atlantia took the field for the title fight and, much like their round-robin encounter, the match was a meat grinder. Unfortunately, one Atlantia fighter had to be transported from the field after sustaining an injury. The Atlantians rallied, however, and bested the Dragon warriors for the title.

Known World Novice Tournament

The third annual Known World Novice Tournament, sponsored by the Order of the Chivalry and run by Sir Sarnac of Ealdormere, drew 100 fighters with less that two years experience. These fighters were organized into 10 round robin shark pits with the top two fighters advancing to the semifinal shark pits. The winners of the two semifinal shark pits would then advance to the title match.

It was an all East Kingdom affair in the finals, as Lord Deacon de Shatillion bested Lord William de Shoreham two bouts to one to claim the title.

Graybeard Tournament

While the young guns of SCA shone on the red tourney field, some the Society’s most experienced warriors met for the Graybeard Tournament on the white tourney field. A total of 28 gentles over the age of 50 participated in the tournament, with the winner taking home a scroll by Lady Aibell Suil-Uaine.

The final fight saw Sir Sextus Plinus Callidus beat Lord Aric Coer d’Latter in two straight bouts to claim the title.

Iron Rose Tourney

Over fifty women took the field in the annual Iron Rose tourney. Results were as follows:

Novice

4th place – Timbrein

3rd place – Stephanie of Wulfshaven

2nd place – Hilda Gunn

1st place – Serena Shieldbreaker

Advanced

4th place – Ariella of Thornburg

3rd place – Marygeld Tynker

2nd place – Baronesse Mira Finnbhar ni Argyll

1st place – THL Kaylah the Cheerful

Today’s Big Battle: The Town Battle

After a long hiatus, the town battle returns to War Point play. The object of this resurrection battle will be to capture “buildings” and move Kingdom relics into temples and ships. The side with the most points for capturing buildings and relics after 90 minutes will claim a single War Point.

What to look for: Chaos! As this style of battle has been off the Pennsic calendar for some time, expect numerous strategies to be employed. There may be a “feeling out” process early in this battle, but expect a spirited fight.

The Battle Lines are Drawn

By DonalBane of Blakmers, Battlefield Reporter

For the Pennsic Independent

On a bright Sunday morning, the mood seemed to match the weather as the sovereigns and populace of the Known World assembled to officially open Pennsic War XXXV.

The Kingdom of Æthelmearc, celebrating its 10th year as an independent kingdom, took its customary place as it was first to occupy the Pennsic fort. Songs of Æthelmearc filled the stage in front of the fort until the two belligerent nations arrived.

The Great Armies of the Midrealm and the East marched onto the field side by side, bringing their allies behind them. One by one, the sovereigns of the Known World were embraced by TRM Malcolm and Tessa of Æthelmearc and then took their place upon the stage until the ceremonies opened with a trumpet fanfare.

HRM Malcolm was first to address the populace, welcoming “his cousins” and the people of the Known World to his land.

“It seems we have a bit of a discussion going on between two of my cousins,” HRM Malcolm said, drawing laughs from the crowd. “And it appears that it needs more discussion.”

“This land, this Society and our world is one of honor, courage and chivalry,” HRM Malcolm added.

” We welcome you all and hope in this week, you are all able to live by those virtues.”

With that Malcolm yielded the stage to HRM Brion of the East and HRM Felix of the Midrealm. HRM Brion spoke first, saying that he had brought with him a large army, but preferred not to engage the Midrealm as enemies but in friendship.

“I think we spoke of how good it is to seek glory on the field,” HRM Brion said to his counterpart. ”Methinks this is good thing to do while we are here.”

“You speak that which is in my heart, Brion,” HRM Felix replied. ”We would hope to repeat the victories that the Midrealm earned on this field last year. We will test ourselves against the East.”

After HRM Brion said it would be an honor to meet him on the field, Their Majesties of An Tir and Artemisia came to the stage. HRM Brion then produced an arrow that was made eight years ago and had “great significance to me.”

“It would do me a great honor and show me great friendship to have you break this with me to declare this war,” Brion said.

HRM Felix replied “In friendship,” and the two kings broke the arrow and embraced one another, drawing cheers from the crowd.

The roll call of Kingdoms then began and HRM Malcolm was first to speak. HRM Malcolm said he remembered the mighty roar of the Dragon from the past year’s war and said that his kingdom “loves a challenge.” With that Malcolm threw his kingdom’s support behind the East.”

HRM Radnor of the West spoke next and noted his kingdom was dedicated “to the highest calling of chivalry.” He said the West would join the side of the smaller force to even out the sides as much as possible and thus declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Craven of Atenveldt spoke next and said he would “follow the bloodline” as HRM Brion was a former king of Atenveldt. Thus, Atenveldt would fight with the East.

In quick succession, Meridies, Caid and Ansteorra all declared for the Midrealm. Atlantia spoken next and swore allegiance to its father kingdom, the East. An Tir also declared for the East.

HRM Semjaka of Calontir spoke next and said he also desired to keep the forces even. As such, he declared for the Midrealm, as did the Kingdom of Trimaris. HRM Bela of the Outlands said his kingdom would side with their longtime allies from Calontir and thus declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Michael of Drachenwald said that while his kingdom was born of the East, “the black dragon will fly together with the red dragon as we will for the Midrealm.” HRM Michael of Artemisia noted he also had bloodlines with HRM Brion, and declared his allegiance to the East.

HRM Aaron of Ealdormere said his Kingdom would join its former brothers in forming “a red wave to sweep away the East.” HRM Draco of Lochac affirmed he was “the real King of Lochac,” and declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Lars of Northshield then made a bit of history as, for the first time, the Gryphon will fight with the Tyger.

Last to speak among the SCA Kingdoms was the newest Kingdom — Gleann Abhann. HRM Mary-Grace first thanked the populace for the opportunity for her Kingdom to fight in the war. HRM Mary-Grace then said she would follow her allies Meridies and declared for the Midrealm,

The Holy Kingdom of Acre then continued its long-standing alliance with the East. Finally, the Great Dark Horde entered as Khan Rowena approached the stage with much fanfare. In honor of the friendship the Horde had with Duke Eliahu, Rowena presented Felix with a Horde arrow as token of the Horde’s allegiance to the Midrealm.

With all parties declared, the Darkyard Legion brought forth the Pennsic War Horn. After several tries, HRM Brion was able to produce a low blast. HRM Felix then attempted to do likewise, but the cannons roared as he tried, officially opening the war.

The final act of Opening Ceremonies was three hearty Vivats in praise of friendship.

Which War?

By Einar Gunn

For the Pennsic Independent

Certain aspects of both events are familiar: armor, boots, helmet, weapons, gear, clothing. There are water-bearers and medics. But in one war, the ammunition is live and there is no resurrection. There is supporting fire, but it comes in the form of explosives rather than rocks from siege engines. The delay for artillery will be minutes, not days, but even those minutes can be crucial. Heat exhaustion is a problem, and it can be lethal at the wrong time. Go down from the heat and you’ll get an IV and a quick evac…hopefully. In both cases, the fighters need water, food, resupply and a competent commander. But the enemy in one cares nothing for chivalry or courtesy. It will strike from the rear, at downed soldiers, even at civilians outside the field of play.

Many SCAdians also serve in the Armed Forces. Each year, a good number of them cannot make Pennsic, because they are deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Bosnia or numerous little flare ups in Africa or elsewhere. Reservists and Guardsmen may be in odd parts of the world for training, providing support to allies from Canada to Australia to Thailand. Or they may be activated themselves.

It is important to remember that the wars we play at are often glamorized from the best, most noble events in history, or replayed to bring that aspect to the front of our re-creation.

While you trek around the lake to parties, or to the archery field, remember our brothers and sisters marching long miles in the Afghan mountains with loads of 100 pounds or more. As you don armor and drink water before the field battle, remember those driving convoys on the MSRs in Iraq, or searching house to house for hostile forces. They also sweat and chafe, but dare not doff their gear to cool down, and there are no holds until one reaches the base. Marshals can think of the Peacekeepers in Bosnia, who must remain vigilant that old hatreds between factions don’t erupt into further violence. Even the most contentious and troublesome happenings at War are tame compared to real engagements. Treating a broken wrist at the castle in high heat and through armor is not the same as doing so on a crowded street, where insurgents are flocking for a piece of the action and fire may come in at the medics as they load the victim for transport. Security can think of patrolling a base perimeter or guarding the gate. As you load or unload your trailer, imagine the millions of tons of supplies loadmasters are pulling in and out of planes in desert heat while keeping an ear out for an attack warning.

And yet, many of us in the military are here at the War, despite the difficulty of travel and leave, and the need to return afterwards. Some troops have made it to Pennsic for mere hours, or just long enough to participate in a favorite event. My wife and I are here straight from our Annual Training, she as a combat photographer at an urban combat training site, I from teaching troops how to respond to IEDs.

There are Strongholds of SCAdians in Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and aboard several ships. Some people might regard this as crazy, to take a break from the military by playing in the heat and cold while wearing garb or armor and walking long distances on rough ground,

But it doesn’t take many events, or more than one War, for most of us to understand. For the dedicated SCAdian, Pennsic is part of the Dream, and what might appear like a play from outside is a way of life, a way of reaching one’s history and soul.

This War, take a few minutes to make it a way to understand the souls of our real world Warriors. Let the cold, heat, rain and pain remind you that you are alive, and cherish the memory when you return home.

Fencing roundup

By Master Liam St. Liam

When Lord Talib of Grey Gargoyles and Tree-Girt Sea saw the Pennsic calendar and then read the date of Chicago’s American Cancer Society Relay For Life fundraising walk, he knew he’d have to doing some creative planning.

So he’s going to do his fundraising on the fencing list at Pennsic instead.

Outside the SCA, Lord Talib is known as Leopold Lastre and works for the Office of the Circuit Court Clerk of Cook County’s Criminal Division. For the last four years, he has joined the folks in his office in raising funds for cancer research through the walkathon held at Stagg Field at the University of Chicago.

Since this year’s event is August 18th, Lord Talib will be taking on all comers on the fencing list between now and then. “I’ll be up there every day,” he said. Lord Talib is asking for a donation of 3 to 5 dollars for three passes against him, and he will wire the money to his office at the end of the war. His office is hoping to raise more than $4,000 – last year’s mark – and donate more money than its dreaded rival, the Traffic Court.

Like many of those who raise money for the American Cancer Society, Lord Talib’s quest is a personal one. His father died of cancer in 1998. “That’s why the Cancer Relay resonates with a lot of people,” he said. “My dad helped make everything happen for me. I do this for him.

Early Bird Tournament

Thursday’s Early Bird fencing tournament was more about stories and schmoozing than about parries and thrusts.

“It’s really more about ‘meet and greet’ than about ‘meet and beat,’ said Lord Martin Baxter of Hawksworth, who ran the tournament and drew 35 fencers from the East, Midrealm, Atlantia, Æthelmearc and Ealdormere. “I really liked the mix of people who came.”

Prior to each bout, the fencers had to share an intriguing fact about themselves and about someone else in the tournament. The “winners” of the tournament included Neko Me of the Midlands, whose own fact was that he was once on all three champions’ teams – fencing, fighting and archery – in the same year. “Actually, he had a lot of interesting facts about himself,” Lord Martin said. “He also had the most interesting fact about someone else.”

That other fact was about one of the other “winners,” Gwyneth McCellan of Æthelmearc, who is one of 125 survivors from the fleet of Admiral Wolfgang. Queen Mary-Grace of Gleann Abhann was among those participating in the tournament.

Upcoming fencing

Today is the Battle of Tortuga, a boat-based melee that starts at noon, followed by a Known World open practice at 2 p.m., and the Baronial Champions “Meet and Beat” at 4 p.m.

Sunday, there is another melee, the Storming of LaRochelle, at noon, and the Rapier Prize Fighters’ Tournament, with proceeds to go to the Chirurgeons. Sunday night, at dark, is the Known World Rapier Party at the Quatrefoil encampment.

Gleann Abhann Storms Into Pennsic

by Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

When last we left Gleann Abhann at the end of the last Pennsic War, they were a Principality about to take the great step into Kingdom status. Preparations were well underway for the October first Coronation, and all was well.

Gleann Abhann (the name is Gaelic for “River Valley”) dates back to the early 90s as a region of Meridies, chose its name, colours, and heraldic symbol (the Ram) in the mid-90’s, and became a Principality in 1998. According to Her Majesty, Mary-Grace, “Meridies was geographically very big, and the two halves of the Kingdom had very different personalities. It seemed like a natural progression.” The Board of Directors approved Gleann Abhann’s petition for Kingdom status in 2004, and in 2005, the Heirs were chosen.

Then Gleann Abhann had a most unwelcome visitor by the name of Katrina.

The Heirs to the Kingdom, Radu and Broinnfinn, were amongst those who found themselves homeless; they were eventually forced to relocate to Little Rock, AR. The majority of the Barony of Seleone (Biloxi, MS) lost almost everything, and the Barony of Axemoor and the Shire of Northover (New Orleans and the Lake Ponchtrain area) were also hard hit. Homes, jobs, and memories were swept away in the swirling waters—not to mention regalia and SCA gear.

Just two months later, however, Gleann Abhann became a kingdom, and there were few dry eyes to be found. How was such a thing possible? Both the relief efforts of the Known World and the spirit of the people of Gleann Abhann made it possible. According to Her Majesty Mary-Grace, “people gave so completely of their time, talents and energy that I am without words to express what it meant to us. It made us all realize what a truly special society we are a part of.”

The next milestone, according to Her Majesty, was the first Crown Toruney as a sovereign kingdom. Though the weather was miserable, the excitement was palpable as the field neared the finals. “I think for many this event marked Gleann Abhann moving forward on her own without Meridies,” Her Majesty said, adding that seeing her husband win was, of course, also a highlight. The first Gulf Wars run by Gleann Abhann followed soon thereafter. The site had been devastated by Katrina, but an excellent relationship with the site owner and an outpouring of assistance allowed the site to be prepared in time. “It was one of the best Gulf Wars ever,” said Her Majesty.

At the Coronation of their Heirs Havordh and Mary-Grace (first to bear the titles of Crown Prince and Princess), Radu and Broinnfinn were given Augmentations of Arms upon stepping down for their great dedication and hard work, and were given the right to style themselves Duke and Duchess Gleann Abhann “so that all would know they had been the first,” explained Her Majesty.

Another highlight was the Known World Heraldic and Scribal Symposium, which took place in New Orleans in June and attracted about 150 guests from fourteen kingdoms. Her Majesty: “We were thrilled to be able to host this, but also, on a mundane note, to bring people to New Orleans. I grew up in New Orleans, and currently live just across the lake from the city and it has truly been devastating to witness what this city has been through. It felt good to bring people to New Orleans and to see them enjoying themselves there.”

The next milestone has arrived—attending Pennsic for the first time as a Kingdom. Her Majesty notes that Gleann Abhann’s reputation is that of a kingdom with “just down-to-earth friendly folks” and a strong youth program. The Kingdom also has an Auxillary, similar to the Calontir Soup Kitchen or the Ealdormere Commissariat, which provides battlefield support for the troops, from construction of tabards to on-field refreshment. Plans for Pennsic include hosting the annual Ladies of the Rose Happy Hour, which gives Ladies of the Rose, Viscountesses, and sitting Queens a chance to relax for a few hours.

Her Majesty would not tell us who Gleann Abhann will fight with at War this year, preferring to reveal it at Opening Ceremonies instead—so stay tuned! You can find Gleann Abhann camping at N01, right next door to Meridies.

Pas du Dragon Noir

By Dominic Seamor

“I just wanted to try something new, a different style from the normal SCA combat,” said Alaric the Mad of the Shire of Roxbury Mill in Atlantia. At the Pas du Dragon Noir on Friday, Alaric tried to have his wish fulfilled.

As Baron Asbjorn Johansen OTC, OM explained, the Pas is an attempt to more closely replicate the actual style of tournament fighting from the 14th and 15th centuries. The Pas du Dragon Noir is patterned after an actual Burgundian-style tournament and is part of the Historic Combat Series, a sequence of combats throughout the War emphasizing historical combat techniques.

Unlike standard SCA heavy fighting, in a Pas d’Armes a fighter loses by being struck with a good thrust to only a few small target areas: the armpit, the inside of the elbow, or the face if the fighter is wearing a barred-front helm. A fighter also loses if he or she is disarmed, driven from the list field, or knocked down. Some Pas d’Armes use a system where an agreed number of good blows must be struck before a fighter has lost.

This is the first Pennsic for Becc from the Shire of Hartstone in Æthelmearc. A man-at-arms to Sir Wulfstan Huscarl, Becc made his own armor so he could fight at this War and he found the Pas very exciting. “I really enjoy it!” he exclaimed after a series of bouts with poleaxes. “You can grab your enemy’s weapon and stab him with it,” a trick that Becc actually used against Baron Asbjorn.

“Duff” Fweolan from the Shire of Anglespur in the East Kingdom said that he fights in at least one of the Historic Combat Series events every Pennsic. Fweolan’s experience at this style of combat was evident as he twice used the pommel of his longsword for a kill against Becc’s “unarmored” face.

One of the most authentic combats was fought between Becc and his friend Lord Wulfr, also from the Shire of Hartstone. Becc and Lord Wulfr were dueling with poleaxes and during an intense round of grappling for each other’s weapons Lord Wulfr accidentally struck off Becc’s right elbow armor. The marshal, Sir Wulfstan, immediately stopped the fight and Baron Asbjorn explained that in a historical combat losing part of your armor was enough to cost you the fight. “It depends on the tournament,” Baron Asbjorn said. “In some combats they seemed to be even more concerned about safety than we are in the SCA, but other tournaments were little more than disguised duels where the opponents were hoping to kill each other. There was a wide range of combats in period”

The Historic Combat Series will be continuing throughout the War. Consult your Pennsic 35 book for dates and times. Most of the Historic Combat Series events do not have any appearance requirement and fighters may wear any SCA-legal armor. Some of the Series do have appearance rules; check your Pennsic book for what rules apply to which combats.

Did Alaric get his wish fulfilled? “You bet!” he said. “I like it!”

Arts & Sciences Road Show

By Master Liam St. Liam

For the Pennsic Independent

With all the battles behind them, more than a dozen Calontiri spent Friday afternoon in the marketplace working on everything from woodworking and sailmaking to pewter casting and throwing pottery.

“We’re inflicting arts & sciences on the masses,” said Conde Fernando Rodriguez de Falcon of the Barony of Three Rivers. “That’s our little joke explanation. We want to let people see that arts and sciences are accessible. It’s nice to get the arts out where the people are.”

Many of Calontir’s artisans are also fighters, and that includes Master Kirk FitzDavid, who is both a Laurel and a member of the Order of Chivalry. It was Master Kirk who originally came up with the idea.

“I usually bring my tools to events to work on projects, and I told (Conde Fernando) that I wanted to do this. He said that what’s good for one is good for everybody,” Master Kirk said. “Last year we just did one day, and this year we decided to do two.”

Calontir’s rulers and heirs both stopped by, as did dozens of other people, many of whom spent a good deal of time watching Conde Fernando pour pewter.

“The old saying was ‘Gold for the royalty, silver for the nobility and pewter for the common folks,’” he explained to a fascinated young girl, his voice loud enough to convey his message to the rest of the crowd. “In the sunlight, pewter looks just like silver.”

He said the key was to get people to see artisans at work. “It’s nice to show people that this isn’t hard. Getting good at it is hard.”

At one end of the line, three women were playing period instruments next to Master Kirk, who was working on a bench. Nearby, Edwearde Boicewright and another craftsman were making stools, including one of strips of rattan. There were also artisans working on weaving, pottery, soapstone carving and mold-making.

At far end of the line, Mistress Rhianwen ferch Bran ap Gruffydd was in the process of making a prototype of a huge, square said for the Fyrdraca, a 32-foot Viking-style ship owned by Duke Dongal and other Calontiri.

“There are no full surviving sails,” said Mistress Rhianwen, who used information from recent finds of Viking ships to determine how big the sail should be. “We have a sail based on my rough figures. We’re going to make prototypes out of canvas before we actually weave one.”

This is the second year the A&S Road Show has visited Pennsic. Hopefully, it will return for many years to come.

Midrealm makes its stand, takes broken field

By DonalBane of Blakmers

Battlefield Reporter for the Pennsic Independent

After 13 War Points: East Tygers 8, Midrealm 5

On the final fighting day of Pennsic XXXV, the Grand Armies of the Midrealm and East met for the final time in the broken field battle. According to the rules, this battle was designed to give the trailing army a chance for a last stand. With the Midrealm trailing, they took full advantage of the rules.

When the first cannon sounded, the Midrealm was given 30 minutes to construct what defenses they could by using hay bales. The Midrealm chose to build a redoubt on the extreme northwest corner of the field. This redoubt had only one entrance, two walls and several other obstacles, which made it nearly impregnable. The Midrealm needed only to hold out for 60 minutes to claim the final two heavy fighting War Points.

With the second cannon sounded, the Midrealm had its forces arrayed on the north side of the battlefield, while the East attacked from the south. Between the two forces was a “river” about 20 yards wide. East forces either had to ford the river on their knees (knights could cross standing as they were considered “on horseback”) or construct bridges from hay bales.

On the east side of the battlefield, forces from Atlantia attempted to ford or cross, but their efforts proved largely ineffective. Eastern forces to the center of the battlefield attempted to construct a bridge, but did so in the crosshairs of the bulk of the Midrealm ballista force. The bridge made it three-fourths of the way across the river before the forces were eliminated.

It was on the west side where the East’s attack made the most headway. Æthelmearc forces chose to ford the stream to protect the bridge being built from defenders from Calontir, Clovenshield and others. The strategy worked and the East established a bridgehead before a hold was called.

From that bridgehead, House Bloodguard spearheaded a push up the west flank of the battlefield that reached the redoubt. However, Bloodguard chose not to enter the redoubt and soon found themselves engage and destroyed by House Darkmoon and House Red Winged Lion. Meanwhile, the majority of the Midrealm forces rushed to contain the bridgehead, with hammer blows landed by the Oaken army, Midlands, and the Tuchux.

With the battle contained elsewhere, Ealdormere took the initiative. The White Wolf’s forces forded the river to the East’s side, overran the remaining Atlantians and then proceeded to roll down the length of the river, taking out Tyger reserves as they went.

The Tyger’s forces ended up being completely encircled on the west side. With victory in sight, forces from House Darkmoon and the Darkyard Legion were ordered to abandon the redoubt and help the final push. Before long, the cannon sounded as the Midrealm eliminated Black Talon and the final Eastern allies.

HRM Felix of the Midrealm, who had to sit out the fight, was all smiles as he addressed his troops after the battle.

“That was an impressive display of tactics and prowess,” HRM Felix said. “You have made us so very proud. You have taken the field. Be sure to greet those across the field with honor.”

Today’s big battle: The flight of dragons through the gate.

As always, VIVAT, HOOBAH, WASSAIL and HUZZAH until Pennsic XXXVI to all the warriors and warrior watchers of the Known World.

Outlands 20th Anniversary Invitational Tournament

Their Majesties Bela and Claudia of The Outlands hosted a tournament celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Outlands’ founding. The only weapon allowed in the list was a great axe, so used because a great axe is the oldest piece of regalia used by the Outlands. Eight gentles participated in a round-robin tournament where each bout was best two of three fights.

In the end, The Honorable Lord Griffith of Barrowhaven from the Outlands won the tournament with a 6-1 record. He and all the other fighters were offered prizes for participating by Their Majesties.

Book Review: The Thorned Rose

Reviewed by Peregrine Fairchylde

For the Pennsic Independent

To merely hold in your hands The Thorned Rose, the book of sonnets by Master Michael McPhe (called Alewright), is a delight. Hand-bound on fine paper, printed in a typeface that recalls its 16th century counterparts and decorated with bold block prints, the small volume of some 70 pages is a pleasure to behold.

Yet what lies within its covers is the truest treat, as Alewright’s poetry stands as testament to the wisdom of the Crown of Æthelmearc in elevating him to the Order of the Laurel.

Subtitled “A Booke of Sonnetes,” The Thorned Rose is dedicated primarily to the Shakespearean form (let’s review: 14 lines, rhymed ABAB CDCD EFEF GG), but departs from it occasionally to indulge the reader with variations on that style, as well as “sundrie pleasing posie and songs.” And these works are truly an indulgence for the reader, displaying a breadth of talent that ranges from formal sonnets to sparkling wit, humor and whimsy, and gratifying examples of applying the art to the spirit of the Society’s recreation of the Middle Ages with odes and memorial works reflecting the poet’s perception of significant events and persons.

Love, naturally, is the common thread among many of the poems, and Alewright approaches this universal virtue from many angles, sneaking up behind it at times, so the reader doesn’t have to suffer through Yet Another Sonnet About My Love. (That said, his own paean to his lady, Katherine Sinclaire, is unabashedly sentimental, yet sublime and not at all saccharine.)

Take, for example, “A lover complains of the coldnesse of his beloved.” Here Alewright, after a dozen lines of the narrator repudiating his lover, subtly lays his finger on the complexity of true affection when he resolves in the final couplet, “And yet, I know I cannot wander far/I am your slave, and you, my shining star.”

Alewright’s wit is perhaps best appreciated in the innuendo-laced poem, “In celebration of a marriage.” Here he simultaneously celebrates and satirizes marriage in verse; every line, taken at face value, would seem an essential truth of wedlock: “This pair, a sight to glorify the sun,/Become much more together than apart.” However, such lofty observations are rendered comic by the collective first letters of each line of the poem, which spell out, “A pregnant bride” – and are compounded by the new meanings that revelation applies to his choice of words like “berths,” “great labor,” “swells” and “deliver.” Even after several readings, the poem remains fresh and delightful.

Returning momentarily to the construction of the book itself, it is modeled after a type of volume that could be purchased in the late 16th century – and we know this because Alewright himself tells us, courtesy of a very informative pamphlet included with the book. The binding method uses a laced-in limp paper structure, with a strip of soft goatskin serving to hold the signatures (individual sections) together. The interior paper is a laid imprint, similar to what would have been used in the period, and the text and illustrations, as mentioned, selected to closely mimic what would have been used at the time, as well. For anyone who has ever wondered what good someone’s A&S project would ever lead to, here’s your answer: A handsome and desirable volume that serves to reinforce the illusion of the Middle Ages being recreated here at War and in our home groups.

The Thorned Rose is available in two forms: The hand-bound edition, which costs $35 for the first copy and $25 for the second, and an unbound version for $10. They may be purchased at the stave church of Master John the Artificer. Alewright has also brought his binding equipment to War and is willing to discuss the binding process with those who are interested; he may be found at his camp, the Black Legion, on Fosse Way between Brewers and Battle roads (N17).

Coffeehouse Rises from the Ashes

Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton

Editor for the Pennsic Independent

Since its debut as a coffeehouse at Pennsic XXXIII, Your Inner Vagabond has quickly become a highlight for many visitors, with its Middle Eastern ambiance, friendly atmosphere, and late hours. According to AJ and Andrew, the world-travelling couple behind YIV, the idea first emerged while they were merchanting during Pennsic XXXII in one of the bazaar spaces. They were set up as a lounge with their pillows and cushions, where they would brew mint tea for their guests. From that came the idea to expand into a full-service coffeehouse. Last year, they had to double in size because of popular demand.

Then the unexpected happened. On Mother’s Day of this year, the garage behind Andrew’s mother’s house where all the coffeehouse equipment and décor was stored was engulfed in flames when a tenant’s motorcycle caught fire.
Interestingly enough, according to AJ and Andrew, “it actually was a few days before we seriously considered not doing Pennsic. The thought just didn’t occur to us at first.” However, when they were unable to get into the garage to assess the damage for several days, they realized that it might not even be possible to replace everything in under three months. Luckily, when they were able to get into the ruins of the garage, they discovered that while only a few benches and some kitchen utensils survived from the coffeehouse itself, most of YIV’s online merchandise (cushions and pillows) was on the other side of the garage and was salvageable.

When news of the fire was posted on AJ and Andrew’s blog, the response was immediate. Over 1000 people visited their website the day after the news was posted, and the helpful and supportive e-mails flooded in. “Right away people wanted to help, and we quickly realized that, much as we hated to admit it, we needed the help,” said AJ and Andrew.

They decided to offer gift certificates to help raise money, and the local SCAdian community donated replacement equipement and helped out during a mid-June building weekend. And last year’s employees have helped them hire staff for this year. “Really, it’s the emotional support that meant more to us than anything. Buying a Gift Certificate didn’t just mean an influx of cash, it really showed us just how much people like YIV and that they believed in us enough to support our return,” said the couple. They added that they did not feel that rebuilding only enough to “make do” was fair to their customers, so they have “bit the bullet” and invested in upgraded equipment where possible to last the Coffeehouse for many years. “We tried to be judicious and realistic, but also do it right.”

If you’ve had a chance to stop by YIV at Pennsic this year, you’ve seen the results of several months of hard work. The atmosphere has returned, and the friendly service and good company seem to be there in abundance as well. Andrew noted on Friday that they had been quite pleased with the business, as well as the continuing expressions of support from the SCA community.

So, you can expect YIV to be a Pennsic fixture in years to come. As for AJ and Andrew, they hope to continue their vagabond lifestyle, perhaps with a visit to India. “Your Inner Vagabond doesn’t really want to settle down just yet. There’s still too big a world out there to not want to see more of it.”
