Pennsic Date change

By Master Liam St. Liam

For the Pennsic Independent

Pennsic always changes from year to year, and the most obvious change for Pennsic XXXVI will be its starting date.

As announced earlier this summer, next year’s Pennsic will start on Friday, July 27 and will run through Sunday, August 12. Baroness Rosamunde Beausivage, next year’s Mayor, made the formal announcement following a meeting of the seneschals of the East, Middle and Æthelmearc and representative of Cooper’s Lake Campground..

The main reasoning behind the change is the early start of school in a number of southern and midwestern states, which causes problems for parents and for SCA members who are teachers or work in other aspects of education. For parents in place like Trimaris and parts of Calontir, the early school start meant only one week of Pennsic – or no Pennsic at all. At least one former member of the Board of Directors, Mistress Elasait of Calontir, has missed Pennsic at time because of the school calendar in her home kingdom of Calontir.

“I cannot tell you how happy I was to hear about the change,” said Lady Seichel von Halstern of the East Kingdom, who is leaving today for a college orientation. “This way, it’s not going to mess me up for the next five years.”

Almost everyone interviewed about the date change either supported it or did not have a strong opinion either way. A few people said they might have to rearrange their July schedules but thought it would not be a major problem.

Prior to Pennsic, the decision produced a rather heated discussion on the East Kingdom Internet mailing list, partly because it had not been discussed publicly. Most of those in other kingdoms said there were not too many complaints.

There will have to be some changes in events in some kingdoms. Æthelmearc may be unable to continue its demo for the Hawk Creek Nature Preserve, and the July event schedule in the East Kingdom will have to be adjusted because the traditional date for Southern region War Camp in Eisental. That event is usually scheduled for the weekend that Pennsic will start next year. Several other kingdoms already do not have major events scheduled in July.

Combat of the Thirty

Immediately following Opening Ceremonies, nearly 60 of the Known World’s finest warriors assembled to stage a recreation of the Combat of the Thirty of the Hundred Years War. Duchess Eanor of Amberhall of the Middle Kingdom led the English, while Sir Nigel MacFarlane of Ealdormere led the French.

Each fighter brought several ransoms to the field in the event they were captured. Fighters could be captured by taking three poleax blows to the head and then led to the opposing side’s banner. Fighters could only be killed by a thrust to a vulnerable spot in their armor. In the event the fighter was killed, his entire ransom stash would be “looted.”

While the English side did manage to ransom a few French fighters, the French were overwhelming in the end and won in a rout. Next year, the English will be captained by Duke Yngvar the Dismal of Æthelmearc, while the French will be led by Sir Kieran MacLoud of the Midrealm.

Inter-Kingdom Unbelted Melee Team Tournament

The Kingdom of Ealdormere hosted the third annual Inter-Kingdom Unbelted Melee Team Tournament around noon Sunday. Seven teams of 15 fighters from across the Known World engaged in a round robin tournament with the two top finishers battling it out for the championship in the end. Results from the round robin were: Midrealm 6-0; Atlantia 5-1; _thelmearc 4-2; Ealdormere 3-3; Atenveldt 2-4; Trimaris 1-5; and Lochac 0-6.

The Midrealm and Atlantia took the field for the title fight and, much like their round-robin encounter, the match was a meat grinder. Unfortunately, one Atlantia fighter had to be transported from the field after sustaining an injury. The Atlantians rallied, however, and bested the Dragon warriors for the title.

Known World Novice Tournament

The third annual Known World Novice Tournament, sponsored by the Order of the Chivalry and run by Sir Sarnac of Ealdormere, drew 100 fighters with less that two years experience. These fighters were organized into 10 round robin shark pits with the top two fighters advancing to the semifinal shark pits. The winners of the two semifinal shark pits would then advance to the title match.

It was an all East Kingdom affair in the finals, as Lord Deacon de Shatillion bested Lord William de Shoreham two bouts to one to claim the title.

Graybeard Tournament

While the young guns of SCA shone on the red tourney field, some the Society’s most experienced warriors met for the Graybeard Tournament on the white tourney field. A total of 28 gentles over the age of 50 participated in the tournament, with the winner taking home a scroll by Lady Aibell Suil-Uaine.

The final fight saw Sir Sextus Plinus Callidus beat Lord Aric Coer d’Latter in two straight bouts to claim the title.

Iron Rose Tourney

Over fifty women took the field in the annual Iron Rose tourney. Results were as follows:

4th place – Timbrein

3rd place – Stephanie of Wulfshaven

2nd place – Hilda Gunn

1st place – Serena Shieldbreaker

4th place – Ariella of Thornburg

3rd place – Marygeld Tynker

2nd place – Baronesse Mira Finnbhar ni Argyll

1st place – THL Kaylah the Cheerful

Today’s Big Battle: The Town Battle

After a long hiatus, the town battle returns to War Point play. The object of this resurrection battle will be to capture “buildings” and move Kingdom relics into temples and ships. The side with the most points for capturing buildings and relics after 90 minutes will claim a single War Point.

What to look for: Chaos! As this style of battle has been off the Pennsic calendar for some time, expect numerous strategies to be employed. There may be a “feeling out” process early in this battle, but expect a spirited fight.

The Battle Lines are Drawn

For the Pennsic Independent

On a bright Sunday morning, the mood seemed to match the weather as the sovereigns and populace of the Known World assembled to officially open Pennsic War XXXV.

The Kingdom of Æthelmearc, celebrating its 10th year as an independent kingdom, took its customary place as it was first to occupy the Pennsic fort. Songs of Æthelmearc filled the stage in front of the fort until the two belligerent nations arrived.

The Great Armies of the Midrealm and the East marched onto the field side by side, bringing their allies behind them. One by one, the sovereigns of the Known World were embraced by TRM Malcolm and Tessa of Æthelmearc and then took their place upon the stage until the ceremonies opened with a trumpet fanfare.

HRM Malcolm was first to address the populace, welcoming “his cousins” and the people of the Known World to his land.

“It seems we have a bit of a discussion going on between two of my cousins,” HRM Malcolm said, drawing laughs from the crowd. “And it appears that it needs more discussion.”

“This land, this Society and our world is one of honor, courage and chivalry,” HRM Malcolm added.

” We welcome you all and hope in this week, you are all able to live by those virtues.”

With that Malcolm yielded the stage to HRM Brion of the East and HRM Felix of the Midrealm. HRM Brion spoke first, saying that he had brought with him a large army, but preferred not to engage the Midrealm as enemies but in friendship.

“I think we spoke of how good it is to seek glory on the field,” HRM Brion said to his counterpart. ”Methinks this is good thing to do while we are here.”

“You speak that which is in my heart, Brion,” HRM Felix replied. ”We would hope to repeat the victories that the Midrealm earned on this field last year. We will test ourselves against the East.”

After HRM Brion said it would be an honor to meet him on the field, Their Majesties of An Tir and Artemisia came to the stage. HRM Brion then produced an arrow that was made eight years ago and had “great significance to me.”

“It would do me a great honor and show me great friendship to have you break this with me to declare this war,” Brion said.

HRM Felix replied “In friendship,” and the two kings broke the arrow and embraced one another, drawing cheers from the crowd.

The roll call of Kingdoms then began and HRM Malcolm was first to speak. HRM Malcolm said he remembered the mighty roar of the Dragon from the past year’s war and said that his kingdom “loves a challenge.” With that Malcolm threw his kingdom’s support behind the East.”

HRM Radnor of the West spoke next and noted his kingdom was dedicated “to the highest calling of chivalry.” He said the West would join the side of the smaller force to even out the sides as much as possible and thus declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Craven of Atenveldt spoke next and said he would “follow the bloodline” as HRM Brion was a former king of Atenveldt. Thus, Atenveldt would fight with the East.

In quick succession, Meridies, Caid and Ansteorra all declared for the Midrealm. Atlantia spoken next and swore allegiance to its father kingdom, the East. An Tir also declared for the East.

HRM Semjaka of Calontir spoke next and said he also desired to keep the forces even. As such, he declared for the Midrealm, as did the Kingdom of Trimaris. HRM Bela of the Outlands said his kingdom would side with their longtime allies from Calontir and thus declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Michael of Drachenwald said that while his kingdom was born of the East, “the black dragon will fly together with the red dragon as we will for the Midrealm.” HRM Michael of Artemisia noted he also had bloodlines with HRM Brion, and declared his allegiance to the East.

HRM Aaron of Ealdormere said his Kingdom would join its former brothers in forming “a red wave to sweep away the East.” HRM Draco of Lochac affirmed he was “the real King of Lochac,” and declared for the Midrealm.

HRM Lars of Northshield then made a bit of history as, for the first time, the Gryphon will fight with the Tyger.

Last to speak among the SCA Kingdoms was the newest Kingdom — Gleann Abhann. HRM Mary-Grace first thanked the populace for the opportunity for her Kingdom to fight in the war. HRM Mary-Grace then said she would follow her allies Meridies and declared for the Midrealm,

The Holy Kingdom of Acre then continued its long-standing alliance with the East. Finally, the Great Dark Horde entered as Khan Rowena approached the stage with much fanfare. In honor of the friendship the Horde had with Duke Eliahu, Rowena presented Felix with a Horde arrow as token of the Horde’s allegiance to the Midrealm.

With all parties declared, the Darkyard Legion brought forth the Pennsic War Horn. After several tries, HRM Brion was able to produce a low blast. HRM Felix then attempted to do likewise, but the cannons roared as he tried, officially opening the war.

The final act of Opening Ceremonies was three hearty Vivats in praise of friendship.

Which War?

By Einar Gunn

For the Pennsic Independent

Certain aspects of both events are familiar: armor, boots, helmet, weapons, gear, clothing. There are water-bearers and medics. But in one war, the ammunition is live and there is no resurrection. There is supporting fire, but it comes in the form of explosives rather than rocks from siege engines. The delay for artillery will be minutes, not days, but even those minutes can be crucial. Heat exhaustion is a problem, and it can be lethal at the wrong time. Go down from the heat and you’ll get an IV and a quick evac…hopefully. In both cases, the fighters need water, food, resupply and a competent commander. But the enemy in one cares nothing for chivalry or courtesy. It will strike from the rear, at downed soldiers, even at civilians outside the field of play.

Many SCAdians also serve in the Armed Forces. Each year, a good number of them cannot make Pennsic, because they are deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, Korea, Bosnia or numerous little flare ups in Africa or elsewhere. Reservists and Guardsmen may be in odd parts of the world for training, providing support to allies from Canada to Australia to Thailand. Or they may be activated themselves.

It is important to remember that the wars we play at are often glamorized from the best, most noble events in history, or replayed to bring that aspect to the front of our re-creation.

While you trek around the lake to parties, or to the archery field, remember our brothers and sisters marching long miles in the Afghan mountains with loads of 100 pounds or more. As you don armor and drink water before the field battle, remember those driving convoys on the MSRs in Iraq, or searching house to house for hostile forces. They also sweat and chafe, but dare not doff their gear to cool down, and there are no holds until one reaches the base. Marshals can think of the Peacekeepers in Bosnia, who must remain vigilant that old hatreds between factions don’t erupt into further violence. Even the most contentious and troublesome happenings at War are tame compared to real engagements. Treating a broken wrist at the castle in high heat and through armor is not the same as doing so on a crowded street, where insurgents are flocking for a piece of the action and fire may come in at the medics as they load the victim for transport. Security can think of patrolling a base perimeter or guarding the gate. As you load or unload your trailer, imagine the millions of tons of supplies loadmasters are pulling in and out of planes in desert heat while keeping an ear out for an attack warning.

And yet, many of us in the military are here at the War, despite the difficulty of travel and leave, and the need to return afterwards. Some troops have made it to Pennsic for mere hours, or just long enough to participate in a favorite event. My wife and I are here straight from our Annual Training, she as a combat photographer at an urban combat training site, I from teaching troops how to respond to IEDs.

There are Strongholds of SCAdians in Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and aboard several ships. Some people might regard this as crazy, to take a break from the military by playing in the heat and cold while wearing garb or armor and walking long distances on rough ground,

But it doesn’t take many events, or more than one War, for most of us to understand. For the dedicated SCAdian, Pennsic is part of the Dream, and what might appear like a play from outside is a way of life, a way of reaching one’s history and soul.

This War, take a few minutes to make it a way to understand the souls of our real world Warriors. Let the cold, heat, rain and pain remind you that you are alive, and cherish the memory when you return home.
