Court Reports

Even before the first formal courts of the war were held, several kingdoms elevated members of their populace or already had sent prople out of peerage vigils.

The first award of the war came during the first week, at Viscount Haakon’s bardic circle when King Malcolm and Queen Tessa ofÆthelmearc made Haakon’s brother, Boris Dragonslayer, a baron of their court.

Earlier this week, prior to the Rapier Town Battle, the Æthelmearc royalty elevated Illadore de Bedegrayne of the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, to the Order of the White Scarf.

King Felix and Queen Madeleina of the Midrealm sent three people on Pelican vigil prior to their Thursday court. They are Caelan O’Rogallary of the incipient shire of al Ja’Far, Ciara McRobbie of Northwoods, and Baron Rocco Barbarossa of the Barony of Roaring Wastes.

The Midrealm also has two new members of the Order of Chivalry .

Angus of Darkmoon and Axle Fairhair were placed on vigil on the field just after the Unbelted Champions Battle. Sir Angus was knighted before the Woods Battle and Sir Axle was knighted before the castle battle.

After Monday’s fighting, three Easterners received the Order of the Tygers Combatant, the kingdom Higher Order of Merit for fighting. They were Eloi Albelard of the Barony of the Bridge, Baron Angus Kerr of Conocrdia of the Snows and Dietrich Schwelgengraber.

In addition, King Brion and his queen also sent two members of their kingdom on vigil for Chivalry. They are Christian Knox and Alexander de Hauteville.

At Æthelmearc Court on Tuesday there were two elevations to the peerage and one other gentle was placed on vigil. Valgardr Gunnarson was elevated to the Order of the Laurel.

Baron Cedric the Humble, who just last month stepped down as Baron of Thescorre, was elevated to the Order of the Pelican.

After court had been suspended, HRM Malcolm recalled His Silver Buccle Principal Herald, Baroness Giulietta da Venezia, and placed her on vigil for the Order of the Pelican. She will be elevated at the Festival of Summer’s End in the Canton of Beau Fleuve next month.

Also of note, the late Master Johan von Traubenberg was named the 21st Jewel of Æthelmearc. Æthelmearc Court is remaining open throughout the War.

At Ealdormere Court on Thursday evening, Eleanor Fairchild was elevated to the Order of the Laurel by TRMs Aaron and Rustique. Also, THLady Joanna of Northumberland was made a Baroness of the Court.

Belted Champions Battle

This year’s belted champions battle may have been the most competitive and chivalrous in Pennsic history. Twenty knight champions from the East and Midrealm met each other on the field and the result was a rollicking affair. After a hold was called to allow dead fighters out, five Midrealm fighters and three East fighters remained on the battlefield, though four of the five Midrealm fighters were confined to their knees.

For the next 15 minutes, those fighters left everything on the field, as chants of “East” and “Tyger” clashed with chants of “Midrealm” and “Draco” from a very enthusiastic crowd. In the end, Duke Edmund of Hertford was the last fighter from the Midrealm. HRH Lucan on the East dispatched him.

Both of Their Majesties had high praise for the champions.

“This is what champions should be,” HRM Felix said. “This was a fight fully of chivalry and honor.”

“In all my years at Pennsic, I have seen a fight like this,” HRM Brion said. “I know not if we will see a fight like this again.”

Plate and Mail Tournament

The Historic Combat Series continued Thursday with the Plate and Mail Tournament. Fighters were assigned a number of counted blows depending on how much plate armor they carried. Victory was achieved by striking that number of good blows or thrusting into a vulnerable point.

Seven fighters participated in the tournament and Viscount Geoffrey Scott of the West went a perfect 6-0 in the round robin tournament to claim the title.

Calontir Greatsword Tournament

HRM Semjaka of Calontir hosted his kingdom’s Greatsword Tournament Tuesday afternoon. A total of 23 fighters came out to battle in this double elimination tournament with two-handed swords.

In the end, Sir Brusi Anderson of the Shetlands, a Lochac knight, defeated Calontir’s Duke Irel Krisk of Starre Inn two bouts to one in the final. HRM Semjaka then offered a 14th century greatsword to Sir Brusi as token of his victory, but Sir Brusi requested it be held by His Majesty and named a token for every future champion.

Known World Squires Tournament

The Kingdom of Atlantia hosted the fifth annual Known World Squires Tournament and 91 squires from throughout the Known World came to the list. The list was fought as a double elimination Atlantian speed tournament.

This tournament has been dominated in recent years from squires of House Ebonwoulf in Atlantia and one their household made the finals again. However, Russell Gilnel Tabere needed two win two bouts against Kane Severus of An Tir to take the title, as Lord Tabere came from the loser’s list. Tabere won the first bout, but Severus won the second to claim the title.

Tyger forces roar over field

After 11 War Points: East Tygers 8, Midrealm Dragons 3

After a day of cooperation, the Grand Armies of the Midrealm and East got back to competition Thursday as the two armies met for the grand spectacle that is the field battle.

This year’s throwdown on the field would involve two fights, each worth one War Point. Combat archery was allowed in the second battle.

The two sides lined up on their traditional starting points with the Midrealm on the east side of the field and East attacking from the west side of the field.

The Dragon’s forces arrayed themselves with the Tuchux and South Oaken and allied kingdoms to the north; the Great Dark Horde, Ealdormere, Calontir and Darkmoon in the center; and Darkyard, Ironwolf, North Oaken and Lochac to the south.

The East lined up with Atlantia and Rome to the north; Æthelmearc, the Southern and Central Armies in the center; and the Northern Army and other allied kingdoms to the south.

At the sound of the cannon, more than 1,000 fighters charged into the fray. Darkyard went on a mad dash on the extreme southern flank, while the Tuchux did the same on the northern edge of the field. However, both charges eventually ran out of steam and manpower. Meanwhile, East forces in the center created large bulges in the Midrealm line, leading to an untenable position for many Midrealm fighters and allies. At the end of the first fight, the East’s forces in the center had the Midrealm’s forces completely encircled and ground them down. Meanwhile, remnants of House Bloodguard and Rome mopped up the remaining forces to the north. When two forces met in the north center of the battlefield, the cannon sounded, signifying an East victory.

The second fight turned out to be much more a battle of attrition. Whole units from both armies were chewed up in a meatgrinder in the center of the battlefield. In the end, elements of Black Talon and Rome were able to survive the melee and score a victor over the last few remaining Midrealm hardcores.

HRM Brion assembled his jubilant forces and asked his army raise cheers to each and every one of his allies after the battle. HRM Brion thanked the East for their prowess, but was quick to give credit his opponents as well.

“Honor these ladies and gentlemen across the field who met you so valiantly this day,” HRM Brion said. “Without their great prowess we would have nothing to do.”

After the battles, however, it was clear the fighting was not done. The army of Ealdormere marched to the center of the battlefield and threw down a challenge to the East’s Northern Army. This was accepted and the White Wolf met the Northern Star in three rounds of combat, with the Spartans and House Darkmoon joining in the fun.

Today’s big battle: The Broken Field Battle

The Broken Field has a new spin on it this year. As the Midrealm is trailing, they will be given the opportunity to take the field first construct whatever obstacles they can create. The East will then have 60 minutes to destroy the Midrealm army. If they are unsuccessful, the Midrealm takes the final two points. There will be no resurrections.

What to watch for: Unique wall and bridge formations. Much like the town battle, this battle may take some figuring out in its early stages. The onus is on the East to win the battle as the attacker.
