Major Changes to War

By Master Liam St. Liam
Battlefield Reporter

This will be a war unlike any other war.

A mutual decision by the royals of the four major kingdoms around Pennsic has led to the opportunity for Æthelmearc to defend its own lands this year, in an alliance with another former Eastern kingdom — Atlantia — against the combined power of the East and the Middle Kingdom in a war that has a new points structure and will very likely not be decided until the final day.
Traditionally, Pennsic has been between the East and its allies and the Midrealm and its allies. Until the early 1990s, the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands, where Pennsic is located, was a barony of the East. Since then, it has been part of the kingdom of Æthelmearc, and the Sylvan Kingdom has fought on both sides.
This year, King Andreas Morgan and Queen Kallista Morganova have aligned their forces with King Bryan of Sacred Stone and Queen Brianna O’Duinn of Atlantia to battle the forces of King Kenric of Warwick and Queen Avelina Keyes of the East and King Savaric de Pardieu and Queen Julianna de Pardieu of the Midrealm.
There will be alliances on both sides, but those appear to be being played close to the vest and will be announced at opening ceremonies Sunday. There will definitely be an attempt to keep the numbers equal on each side.
As a side note, of the four sets of royals who represent the four principal kingdoms, three are sitting the throne for the first time. Only Bryan and Brianna have reigned before. Their reign was a winter reign, so this is their first Pennsic.

On to the points
There are 47 war points available this year, which means the side that reaches 24 first wins the war. There are only 23 points available through Wednesday’s fighting, and since the nine archery war-shoot points are not expected to be awarded until Friday, it’s likely the war’s outcome will remain in doubt until then. Combining the nine archery points, the two for the rapier woods battle and the five available at the field battle, Friday’s competitions are worth 16 points.
The first war point, and it is a special one, will be awarded for the siege competition at the fort, which is scheduled for 12:30 to 3:30 PM Saturday. This point will also determine the start of the armored town battle Monday.
Only two points will actually be awarded on Sunday, but those points will come from a fascinating scenario.
Over the years, one of the most intense competitions at war has been the annual Fencing Champions Battle, which pits 20 Eastern fencers and 10 allies against 20 Midrealm fencers and 10 allies. Some of the rivalries have been epic, and each side always approached the tournament — one-on-one, first to 16 victories wins — with utmost seriousness and desire to win.
This year, those Midrealmers and Easterners will be cheering for each other. That should be interesting.
The Atlantians and Æthelmarcians have fought as allies and as opponents in the past. They tended to be two of the three most sought-after allies, with Ansteorra being the third.
As mentioned before, there has been no official announcement of alliances yet.
This event will have 15 fighters from each of the principal kingdoms and 10 allies for each side.
The populace archery shoot, one of the ways almost any Pennsic attendee can help the war effort, begins at 11 AM Sunday and runs until 2 PM. Friday.

Armored battles start
This year’s schedule has fencing in the morning and the armored battles in the afternoon. Monday is the rapier town battle from 10 to noon, followed by the armored town battle at 1 PM. The fencing battle is worth two points and the armored battle is worth five.
Tuesday has a similar setup with the two-point rapier flag battle at 10 AM and the five-point armored bridge battle scenarios beginning at 1 PM.
A couple of things to look for on the bridges include the Calontiri shield wall and the Ealdormerean units. If they are on the same side, that could help make a difference. If they are on opposite sides, let’s hope they are on the lower bridge so we can watch the fun. Also, expect some headlong rushes from the Tuchux. Ansteorra’s alliance decision will also be critical.
There are no mass battles on Wednesday, but this would be a great chance to see the best thrown-weapons competitors in the champions battle at 9:30 AM. The archery champions start at 9 AM.
Armored battles start at 10 AM with the heroic champions, followed by the unbelted champions. Here’s another case where the rivalry in the past has been incredibly intense and now Easterners and Midrealmers will fight together and have new war stories.
All of those battles are worth a single war point. The belted champions will fight, but not for a war point.
Thursday will see the rapier field battle, worth two points, beginning at 10 AM, and the armored woods battle, worth six points, starting at 1 PM. It’s possible the war could be decided by the end of the day, but it’s more likely that this unusual war will hinge on the archery results and the final fencing and armored battles.

Weathering the Storm

By Lady Mary of Montevale
Features Reporter

Perhaps Thor, Norse god of thunder, had finally decided to attend the Pennsic War. Perhaps it was just an unusual weather formation in an area already noted for its strong summer thunderstorms. Whichever explanation you prefer, in the mid-afternoon of the first Saturday of Pennsic XLI Cooper’s Lake Campground found itself in the midst of a violent but brief weather phenomenon known as a microburst.
According to the NOAA web site, a microburst is a downdraft in a thunderstorm that is less than 2.5 miles in scale. It can produce damage comparable or even worse than that of some tornadoes. The strong winds, heavy rainfall and possibly hail, and the lightning of a thunderstorm are concentrated in a very small area for a very short time, typically less than fifteen minutes.
All these contributing factors existed in a storm that moved toward Pennsic on the afternoon of July 28. Knowing that a thunderstorm was coming, many attendees who had already trolled in were rushing to get their tents and pavilions set up before it arrived. Others were still in or near their vehicles parked on the Battlefield, awaiting their turn at Troll, a process which was going to be completed electronically for the first time ever.
And then the microburst hit.
One person on the Battlefield described it as “a wall of water that took about 20 seconds to cross the entire length of the field.” At the northern end of the Serengeti where members of the Black Dragon Company were setting up their carport-style pavilions, Erica Rothals saw the dark wall of rain coming from the direction of Mount Eislinn (the hill north of the Battlefield on which the current Pennsic number is mowed as Roman numerals into the grass each year). A few seconds later, the lone tree at the Currie Road side of the Thrown Weapons range vanished behind the approaching wall of water. There was almost no time for anyone to react; within 15 seconds they were soaking wet.
Hail fell in the B Block where it took out three carport-style tents. On the Serengeti people in numerous camps struggled to keep tents and canopies which were not yet fully set up or staked down from collapsing or blowing away completely in the strong winds. Leon the Navigator later told friends that his eighteen-inch Panther tent stakes were bent at right angles before they pulled out completely.
Near the Barn, the proprietor of Dragon’s Magic realized she had made a wise decision a short time before not to try to move her vehicle and trailer to the parking area before the storm hit. She’d had some previous experience with bad storms at Pennsic: at Pennsic XXXII (2003) the maple tree beside the wooden house from which she merchants was struck by lightning and destroyed.
The lightning strike this past Saturday turned out to be on the “new” side of the center of Pennsic, near the Food Court and the beginning of the merchant area. Baron Master Eirik of Munitions Grade Arms was standing at the back of his space on Plunder Lane, looking toward the southeast and the general direction of Chirurgeon’s Point on the services block. In the merchant office trailer across the road from that services block, Cindy Cooper was looking out a window in the direction of the merchant spaces to her northwest. Both she and Eirik saw the lightning bolt which came to ground at some point midway between their respective locations. Only in later conversation did they determine they had seen the same lightning strike.
The point where that strike hit turned out to be the back end of the roofline at the brown wooden building in which Anselm Arms and Armor and Acanthusleaf Designs are located. Neither of those merchants was yet on site, but Gareth of Anselm Arms received a phone call at home from one of his neighbor merchants telling him his building had been struck by lightning. When he arrived on site on Sunday, it was a bit of a surprise and certainly a great relief to find his building had not been reduced to smoking ruins. He had lost a short section of his roof line and a power strip.
Gareth still has the splintered pieces of 2 x 4 that had been nailed along the top of his roof as well as the nails themselves, now bent at a ninety degree angle. With only minor damage to the building, it is now easy for him to joke that the lightning strike hit where it did only because the much taller Stave Church which used to stand across the road is now gone.
Mystic Mail now occupies that space across the road. The proprietors are very thankful they had none of their electronics unpacked, much less up and running at the time. Anything plugged in would have been fried. It was a terrifying enough experience for Ailís when the lightning strike which was so close by knocked her off her feet.
The important electronics for the new check-in procedures at Troll, not far from the spot where the lightning struck, apparently did not fare so well. When Troll finally re-opened, the oh-so-important receipts (the ones that prove you have already been through Troll and have paid your site fees if you would happen to lose your medallion) had to be written out by hand. Some people who trolled in after the microburst on Saturday afternoon and into the evening reported by cell phone to friends still en route to the War that it was taking as long as 5 or 6 hours to complete trolling in.
Meanwhile in the merchant area and in camps all across the Serengeti, people were telling each other that they had also felt varying degrees of tingling (like a mild electric shock) from the lightning strike. Only 50 or 60 yards from the Anselm Arms building, Ian of Montevale and others who were helping a merchant set up felt the tingling in their feet.
Down along By the Way, the Baron and Baroness of Sternfeld had been inside their tent struggling to keep the wind from lifting off the top of the tent. While she clutched at a tent flap, the Baroness inadvertently had one arm against a tent pole and she felt an electric charge that entered at the base of her palm and moved through her upraised arm to exit near her shoulder. The Baron was not touching any tent poles, but he still felt the electric charge in his hand. Their shade canopy that had survived several strong Pennsic storms was a total ruin.
In the Barony of Fenix camp at the corner of Brewer’s and Fosse Way, a man holding a 20-foot aluminum pole and a second man holding onto the rest of the carport frame they were setting up both felt a “zap” from the electrical charge in the area while a camp mate who was holding a wooden tent pole felt nothing.
The many reports such as these over an area of hundreds of yards is not unusual in the wake of a lightning strike. As a positive electrical charge builds up overhead in a thunderstorm, a corresponding negative charge of ions in the ground beneath will try to reach upward, moving through whatever happens to occupy the intervening space, whether it is a tent pole, the tent itself, a building, or people. When this happens, you do not want to be the tallest thing in the area, even if it means quickly lying down flat in the mud. If you are in a car, you will be pretty safe from the electricity of the storm because the tires on your vehicle will ground it. Strong winds or suddenly rising flood waters are a different matter for vehicles and their occupants, of course.
Luckily, despite the numerous accounts of people who felt something when the lightning struck at the Anselm Arms building, no one seems to have suffered any serious injuries or lasting effects--unless you want to count expressions such as “I’ve had the experience now; I do not want to have it again,” and some general apprehension about how someone might react if another thunderstorm of any kind happens during Pennsic.
By Sunday, Pennsic Mayor Lord Manuel de la Rosa y Botella de Miérkoles had posted to his blog reporting the situation at Troll, just as earlier in the summer he had moved to quell rumors in many places on line when he posted confirmation that the bridge on Currie Road would not be finished in time for Pennsic and detour routes to Cooper’s Lake would be needed. This time he added updates about how things were up and running again at Troll to reassure those yet to arrive at this year’s War. By now everything seems to be pretty much back to normal and ready for the influx of arrivals over Pennsic XLI’s middle weekend.

A Fabriholic at Pennsic

By Kat Montague
For the Pennsic Independent

For a confirmed fabriholic, wandering through the Market is a delightful (and budget-challenging) experience. Actually being able to fondle the many period-appropriate fabrics and browse through a cornucopia of natural dyes, a plethora of sewing tools, rainbows of silk floss and a small library’s worth of textile-related books is a rare treat.
This year, most of my favorites — Sparrowhawk Studios, Miriam’s Yarns and Fibers, Brush Creek Wool Works, World of Isabella, Dragon’s Magic, Carolina Calicos — are back. I sew, dye, knit and embroider. I don’t spin or weave, and my choice of merchants reflects this.
At Sparrowhawk Studios I found some Eterna silks, which have been hard to come by for the past year, some pretty bone bobbins and the Victoria and Albert Musuem’s wonderful book on Elizabethan stitches. They also carry a swift that’s very much like the one in the Birka find.
Miriam’s Yarns and Fibers’ selection of embroidery floss is, as usual, stunning. The small avalanche of hand-dyed skeins spilling over her table is a treat to look at and the wide range of colors ensures that just the right shade is in there somewhere. Each skein is actually several small skeins, which makes reeling it off much easier.
Brush Creek Wool Works have their usual huge selection — including, among many other things, books, dyes, spices, roving, fleeces, slippers, silk hankies, Viking wool combs, soap, catnip, exotic yarns, patterns, and little pots of wool wax cream. Each Pennsic I stock up there on dyes and mordants; this year I focused on reds — brazilwood, lac stick, madder and cochineal.
World of Isabella has fine linen and the only velvets I found this year, including a lovely red.
Dragon’s Magic has their usual excellent selection of wools and linens, and this year I managed to find a linen with a subtle white on white pattern woven into it. If you’ve been looking for linen embroidery floss, this is the place to go — and your last chance. The manufacturer appears to have stopped making it and Dragon’s Magic has a small supply left; this is the last year they will be carrying it.
Sadly, The Lacemaker shut down their business last year and will be sorely missed.
On the plus side, we have a wonderful new addition to the textile roster: 96 District. Their big, beautifully-arranged store is stocked with linens, woolens, silks, cottons and fustians (cotton/linen blends) in a good range of colors. They also carry luscious silk ribbon in a wide range of colour and width, much boning — flat and spiral metal — and at least three widths of wicker. To my surprise they also have (or had) a bolt of Sunforger canvas — which was very convenient as I need to add a rain flap to my tent and was not looking forward to finding an online source and paying shipping and handling.
Carolina Calicos are at their usual location, with their usual great selection of linens and cottons. They’ve once more pre-washed samples to show how the fabrics look after they’ve been through the laundry, which is a great idea. This year Carolina has added some very attractive cotton damasks and some interesting silks.
For those with a passion for truly period textiles and deep pockets, White Wolf and the Phoenix have their usual small but spectacular selection of handwoven fabrics.
Today (Friday) is the last day for merchants, so get your shopping done as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

Children Take Fort Again

Water1.jpg
Children take the fort.

By Mary of Montevale
Features Reporter

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a young man in possession of a pump-action super soaker must be in want of a Water Battle.” – Jane of Austen (Ansteorra)

That young man and – as estimated – a couple of hundred like him were joined by an equal number of young women shortly after midday Thursday at the battlefield fort for well over an hour of what they all wanted.
Like any other battle at Pennsic, the Children’s Water Battle involves logistics, strategy, and tactics. Many of the logistics are handled by the activity’s two sponsoring groups, Shadowclans and Black Talon (both Mid) who set up the necessary equipment earlier in the day. Joining them this year in these preparations was Queen Julianna of the Midrealm who then remained to take part in the battle.
Lord Thurkill l’Armier (Mid) who has been involved since almost the first year of such water battles in A.S. 24 and who served as one of the major organizers of this year’s, explained that the bulk of the treasure bags given to all the young participants this year were produced by the members of Black Talon. The zip-lock bags contain items like candy, small toys, stickers, glow sticks, and so on. They are kept on the “other” side of the Fort where volunteers hand them out to the children after they have broken through the Fort’s defenses.
Large metal water troughs are positioned where the attacking forces will take up their positions. The water buffalo is fitted with a water balloon filling attachment. Parents contribute to the logistics as well by hauling up family ice wagons bearing lidded rubber tubs which have been filled with pre-loaded ammunition (water balloons and water pistols ranging from small to incredibly large). Uniforms among the troops are hardly standard. There are almost as many swim suits in evidence as lightweight, loose-fitting tunics made of washable fabrics.
The strategy of the battle is for the Fort to be defended by adults from the sponsoring groups and some invited guests. This year that included Queens Julianna (Mid) and Kallista (Æthelmearc). On the side of the attackers, the first wave will be the youngest and smallest children to whom parents and other bystanders call out encouragement and instructions. Marshals in tabards blazoned with crosssed super-soakers in bubble gum pink and neon green, work hard to bring the sometimes-uncertain youngest warriors forward into good attack positions as well as to keep the older children well back from the younger ones. A pair of horns bleat, and the first assault begins.
Water shoots from everywhere, not just from the first rank in the attack and from the defenders, since most of the “gun” weapons have a range of 20 to 30 feet. On Thursday it did not take very long for the front line to reach the gates, “force” them open, and rush through to the other size where their prizes of treasures bags waited. After a pause for reloading of weapons and a check by the marshals that all was in order, a second assault was launched. Seen in the front lines in this assault as well as the third one (it is obviously a resurrection battle), was Queen Brianna of Atlantia, giving as good as she got--and she did get soaked. From the rear lines on the attacking side, a group of adults and children working water balloon slingshots easily overshot the ramparts of the Fort and soaked both defenders and the already-victorious attackers on the uphill side.
It seems that even sweet-looking young girls understand the tactics to be employed with water pistols and super-soakers: just keep walking forward with an angelic smile on your face, continuously shooting streams of water at anybody in front of you. It should also be noted that a loosely formed double or triple line of armed ten year olds, when forced to wait five minutes to begin their own assault on the Fort, will find it impossible to avoid the temptation to let fly with a few random shots that hit their own allies or “accidentally” lob a water balloon in the direction of Mom or Dad.
One dad who had come prepared to defend himself with a buckler from his own rattan fighting wear discovered that while it worked pretty well against small water pistols, it was “only marginally effective” against the larger, multi-stream weapons. A mom found herself the object of a bit of subterfuge as her daughter looped around with the intent to soak her from the back-- if it hadn’t turned out that it is harder than that daughter thought to outsmart her mother.
Everyone gets wet--moms, dads, kids, grandparents, marshals, photographers, newspaper reporters. After all, that’s the point with a water battle on a hot, sunny afternoon. It’s so much fun that the best thing to do afterwards is to go get some ice cream.

Barony of Flaming Gryphon members to wear subdued livery!
Yes, they really are. The subdued livery represents military camouflage since the barony’s charitable efforts this year are for the Wounded Warrior Project
The Wounded Warrior Project (website: www.woundedwarriorproject.org) is a national organization whose vision is “to foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation’s history.” Their purpose is three-fold: to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members,to help injured service members aid and assist each other and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
On Monday Flaming Gryphon fighters will wear subdued livery while participating in the Armored Town Battle which begins at 1 pm on the main battlefield. They will be accepting donations at that time.
On Wednesday, beginning at 10 AM, small groups from the Barony will be going from camp to camp asking for donations. They will also be asking for donations in the central, public areas of the War, and someone will be “at home” if you would rather leave your donation at their camp, which is located in W07 at the foot of Runestone Hill.
Last year just under $3,000 was collected for fighting breast cancer during a similar campaign which involved members of the Barony wearing pink and their fighters wearing pink tabards while taking part in one day’s war point battle. They hope to do even better this year.
The Wounded Warrior Project was selected as this year’s charitable effort because there are some members of the Barony directly involved with the Project. The Barony did some research and found that 82 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to the people the charity was formed to help.
Questions about the collection can be directed to Baron Dafydd Blaidd at the baronial camp.

This is a War for Dreams

By Master Liam St. Liam
Battlefield Reporter

Moments after King Andreas of Æthelmearc had welcomed the crowd at Opening Ceremonies, King Kenric of the East declared that his kingdom would join the Middle Kingdom as an ally after four decades as enemies, “as a foundation for the friendship of all the kingdoms and the future of the Pennsic War.” The crowd, jammed into the barn because of the rain, responded with “huzzahs,” “hoobahs” and “vivats.”
King Savaric of the Midrealm joined King Kenric in saying, “this is historic, and we are allies with the East. We are now able to stand by them as comrades. There is a lot of history going on here.”
King Brian of Atlantia joined Æthelmearc to form The Alliance. He told of meeting King Savaric shortly after winning Atlantian crown. “Savaric came to me and told me of this plan, and I was sort of stunned,” he said, noting he quickly decided the plan was indeed a good one. “This is a war for dreams,” he said.

Setting the sides
Going in, the kings of the East and the Middle Kingdom knew they would be fighting together, but they did not know who else would be on their side.
Those sides were not decided until Saturday night’s Beer and Brats get-together at Midrealm Royal.
The sides supporting the East and the Midrealm fell together very quickly when King Hrafn of Ansteorra declared for the East and Middle while Calontir, an Ansteorran ally, joined in. Artemesia, a Calontiri ally, fell into place and An Tir, the Outlands, the Great Dark Horde, and the Kingdom of Acre also came aboard.
The Alliance, Æthelmearc and Atlantia had their share of kingdoms join them. The West was first, and the others included Ealdormere, Caid, Lochac, Atenveldt, Northshield, Trimaris and Drachenwald.
King Ailgheanan of Meridies said he was excited to attend a war where the goal was to emphasize fun and therefore before each battle Meredies would determine which side had the fewest fighters and would join that side to even out the numbers. The Kingdom of Gleann Abhann was not present.
Today’s war points include the rapier town battle, which is worth two points, and the armored town battle, which is worth six. The archery populace point will continue through Friday. The fencing champions battle, worth two war points was postponed until 2 p.m., Wednesday.

Honoring Duke Finnvar
A poignant moment came when King Kenric called Jarl Valgard Stonecleaver, a noted SCA historian, to the podium. He was there to call the recently retired Duke Finnvar du Taahe to receive a banner honoring him as the only man who was war king of both the East and the Midrealm – at Pennsics II and VI, respectively, and the only man to fight in the battles at every Pennsic War from Pennsic I to Pennsic 40.
As His Grace says, “Either you hang up your shield or a dragon eats you.”
We owe him a debt we cannot repay,” Jarl Valgard said, just before the kings of the East and the Midrealm handed Finnvar the banner.

Tournament of Chivalry

By Lady Mary of Montevale.
Features Reporter

An oxymoron is scheduled for the main battlefield this Sunday afternoon, the Tournament of Chivalry which, despite its name, is neither a tournament nor open only to the Chivalry.
A first-time event for Pennsicand scheduled to follow opening ceremonies, it is open to all rattan fighters regardless of their level of fighting skill or experience. Also known as a gold chain tourney or a duke university (Trimaris), a Tournament of Chivalry is considered in the Midrealm to be “our greatest teaching tool,” according to HRM Savaric of that Kingdom. His Majesty took the time yesterday to explain to me about tournaments of chivalry in general as well as to relate a little background of why a Tournament of Chivalry comes to Pennsic this year for the very first time.
In previous years, the fighting after the Opening Ceremonies has often been the Champions’ Battles which end with the awarding of that Pennsic’s first war points. When the schedule for fighting events at Pennsic 41 was being discussed, it was decided to schedule something that would involve many more fighters and be an afternoon of fun and learning for all.
Sunday’s start time of 2 PM allows fighters to go change from their finery of the opening ceremonies to their armor and also to bring their choice of weapons back to the battlefield. The “tournament” is set to run as three 45-minute sessions with breaks in between. Belted fighters will gather in the center of the field, while everyone else will line up around the perimeter. Each Kingdom will have a banner on the field to help everyone know where to form up. During each session there will be classes as well as opportunities for single combat.
The Ladies of the Rose serve a vital role throughout the afternoon as they guide fighters to the specialty classes and pair up fighters for the individual bouts. These one-on-one meetings can be a wonderful opportunity to face fighters from other kingdoms with whom you might never otherwise engage in single combat.
The specialty classes offer a chance to learn from some of the best heavy weapons teachers in the Known World.Classes include HRM Hirsch Sean of Artemisia–shot recovery; HRM King Hrafan of Ansteorra–footwork; HRM King Kirsch of Calontir–great sword; Duke Seth of Meridies–spear and melee; Duke Lucan of the East–range control and power development; Duke Rangvaldr of the Midrealm–targeting; Duke Brannos of the Midrealm–boxer-style strikes; Duke Maynard of Æthelmearc–polearm; and others. More spontaneous classes will likely take place during the breaks.
The work of organizing and coordinating the first Known World Tournament of Chivalry was done by Duke Ullr and Duchess Annalise of the Midrealm. HRM Savaric pointed out that this is an undertaking that “could not be done without good allies.” He stated his belief that “this War will be the greatest contest of arms the Known World has even seen.”

Young Archers...At the Mark

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor in Chief

Merida. Hawkeye. Katniss Everdeen. If you are a parent, chances are you may haveheard one or more of these names in your house this year, and as a result you may have young people eager to try their hand at archery. If my experience at an Ealdormere event about a month ago is any guide, where the archery range was swamped with young archers eager to try the sport, we will have more young archers on the range this year than ever before. Luckily, Pennsic is one of the best places for people of any age to try their hand with a bow, to acquire equipment, and to have fun. When I’m not editing the Independent, I’m Ealdormere’s Kingdom Archery Marshal, and I’d like to share a few tips for young archers.
Equipment will be your first requirement. First check with local archery marshals attending Pennsic to see if they brought any loaner equipment. Bows may definitely be shared amongst shooters, so long as each shooter is inspected with the equipment separately. Marshals do this in order to make sure the equipment fits the archer properly. This is especially important for young shooters. If you cannot find loaner equipment, almost all of the archery merchants here at Pennsic carry youth bows, arrows, and other equipment and they may be willing to let archers try them out on the range to make sure they’re getting what will work for them.
In general, beginning archers under 10 will probably want to start with a bow in the 10-15 lb range, while those between 11-15 can start with a 20-25 lb bow. Many adult shooters also shoot with a 25 lb bow quite effectively even on longer-distance shoots. The key is that the shooter be able to draw the bow to a steady nock point, often using a cheek or jawline as an anchor. Too heavy a draw weight and the young archer will become frustrated quickly. Another key point is to do an eye dominance test to determine whether the shooter should be shooting left or right handed. (Do not assume that because you write with your right hand you will be a right-handed shooter!) A marshal or archery merchant can help.
I usually recommend first-time young shooters under 10 or 11 start with a basic fiberglass bow until they’re sure they are going to continue shooting. (If you’re willing to go offsite, these may often be found at Walmart, although you will need to acquire wood-shafted arrows). The nice thing about these bows is that they can be shot either left or right handed. Take-down recurve bows are an affordable option for older beginner shooters. You’ll also want at least half a dozen arrows appropriately sized for the archer (any of the archery merchants and/or marshals can help you with this one) and optimally, an arm bracer and a finger tab or shooting glove.
The next task is to get out to the archery range! Yes, it is a long walk, but keep an eye out for the regular buses running out to the range (stops are along the west side of the battlefield). They will become more frequent starting on Sunday, when war point shooting begins. Before you make the trip, read the rules of the range in the Pennsic book (this applies regardless of your age!)
When you reach the range, you will need to get your equipment inspected by a marshal, and then you are ready to shoot. There will be a family range available all during Pennsic for families to shoot together, and there are marshals available to supervise the range to help get you familiar with the rules and to ensure safety standards are followed. The general rules regarding minors at other Pennsic activities also apply on the range, so please check your Pennsic booklet. Check in at the marshals’ tent to see if any special shoots for young people are scheduled. The youth Archer Champions shoot takes place on Sunday from 4-6 PM, so come out and participate or to watch the other young shooters. And, of course, shooters of any age may shoot the War Point shoots daily starting on Sunday (except for Wednesday).
If you have been here at Pennsic and missed the Olympics, you may not have heard that NBC has stated that archery was its most popular event to view over the first few days—and Olympians shoot recurve bows not too far removed from what you’ll see on the range at Pennsic. This is a fabulous place to begin your archery adventure.

Storming the Fort for Fun and Glory

By Lady Noelle de la Plume
Rapier Reporter

Time was on the defenders’ side with the La Rochelle battle on Saturday. Whoever held the fort longest, won.
“If you think this fight is so you can prove something, go away,” Master Uadahlrich von Sassmanshausen said. “If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.”
Historically speaking, La Rochelle was overtaken by sheer numbers on the attackers’ side. Therefore in the La Rochelle Battle at Pennsic, the attackers get unlimited resurrections whereas the defenders only get two.
This battle has been run for the past 11 years and is one of the few in which the sides are not split up by kingdom. Fencers can be on teams with people they usually practice with or could oppose them. The fight continues until everyone on the inside is killed. This year there were about 100 fencers on each side.
“This battle is one of the cleanest and with the fewest issues. Only a few minor bumps and bruises,” Uadahlrich said. “Everyone here had a good time and that’s the whole reason for it.”
The battle begins by the attackers placing a petard at the main gate and the marshals yelling. Eventually, there was an earth-shattering kaboom. A petard was a small bomb used to blow open gates on fortifications, usually made out of a church bell. However, this petard bore an uncanny resemblance to a mini-keg of beer. If the petard got hit with rubberband guns, whether in transition or not, then it blew up and anyone standing within a few paces was killed.
The first battle finished in 12 minutes and 18 seconds. The defenders and attackers switched and the second battle was 12 minutes and 48 seconds. Don Aniasfenne was the last man standing in the first battle. “It was overwhelming,” he said. “I was sleeping in the tower during the beginning. But, if you’re going to die, die gloriously.”
The third battle pitted the fencers with the highest award in rapier against the world. It lasted only 7 minutes and 55 seconds, with the world victorious. There were also no rubberband guns and no resurrections allowed.
“The most fun of La Rochelle was being completely outnumbered as the highest award fencers against the world,” Connor said. “We were proud of the opposing fencers for beating us soundly. It shows us that they’re learning.”
Lysanthria Larkin, who was in a wheelchair during the battle, had Professor Pieter van Doorn be her “horse.” He moved her to engage in battles and backed her up when she died to resurrect. The other fencers were told that Pieter had full armor on and therefore was immune to any sword shots or rubberband shots. Once Lysanthria died, he would become a “fleshy, squishy target,” in Uadahlrich’s words.
“Pieter’s hilarious,” Lysanthria said. “I had fun killing all the people trying to raid my house”
Uadahlrich said that it was different this year having someone in a wheelchair in the battle. Having Pieter act as her horse “was a very worthy thing,” he said. It was “very, very cool” of Pieter to provide mobility for Lysanthria on the field.
“We kept her on the defensive side for safety’s sake,” said Uadahlrich. “She was the mistress of the house. She was really tickled to have the chance to come out and play.”
The technique the defenders would stick to was creating a kill pocket in front of the main gate. After the gate was blown, they would walk up to the gate and line up in an arch around the gate, killing the attackers as they came through. Since the attackers had unlimited resurrections, the defenders tried to only hit the legs to limit their mobility and block more fencers from coming in.
Attackers mostly stuck to the “stab, then die” procedure. They lined up to rush in, attempted to kill someone quickly, and left when killed.
“It’s fun standing around for a half hour in line,” said Armond from Atlantia, sarcastically.
Other ways the fencers could die was touching the bale line (the ones that were not the resurrection bale), going on the bridge over the main gate, or not heeding the marshals. It was up to the many marshals to judge if rules were broken.
Uadahlrich gave a shout out and eternal thanks to the EMS people and chirurgeons who brought water out for them. He thanked all the marshals who volunteered their time, and everyone who came out to play.

eTroll...The Same But Different

By Lady Mary of Montevale

You’re here already, which means you also already know there have been a few changes to the Pennsic checking-in procedures (often called “trolling in”). Things were just beginning to get much, much busier for the staff at Troll when I was there on Friday afternoon as the familiar middle weekend rush of new arrivals started. Despite that, I was able to talk with Head Troll, Master Vorlin o’r Gwig (Midrealm), about the new electronic features of Troll at Pennsic XLI.
“It’s the same thing, only different,” is how he described it, adding that this description could have been applied equally well to a number of other changes that have come to Pennsic over the years.
Efforts have been going on for several years, Master Vorlin told me. A key turning point in the process occurred when the Coopers developed a program that runs on tablet computers. Last year the Troll staff were told, “We’re going to try this.” The first actual tryout came at Æthelmearc War Practice in mid-May this year.
As with virtually every newly-developed computer program, there were some tweaks that needed to be made. The troll workers at War Practice made suggestions, and the program designer implemented many of these changes. Earlier this summer, training sessions with the new program and the tablets were held for veteran Troll workers and for anyone who had volunteered to work “Shift Zero.”
Most people arriving at the War this year have found almost everything about the check-in process at Troll to be just like it was last year: the “Welcome home” greeting, the need to show photo ID and an SCA membership card if they have one, a perusal of their information in the database, and the need to provide vehicle information including license plate number before moving on to the cashier’s counter to pay any balance due and receive their medallion and the familiar two books.
In all of that, there was really only one change and it was in form only. The personal data was viewed on the screen of an electronic tablet and the signature was made on the computer screen as well. Admittedly, signing your name on a screen with one fingertip does make your John Hancock look a bit as if you have already been party-hopping down in the Bog, but the volunteers on the other side of the counter assure you that this doesn’t matter.
Master Vorlin does hope that as the folks at Troll work out the growing pains in the system to come up with some procedural changes for some situations (and many of those have turned out to be minor, but often something that could not have been predicted), the people coming through Troll will be able to be patient.
“Our goal is the same as yours-to get you through the line as quickly as possible while meeting the requirements of the Society and of the Coopers,” were his exact words.
There are many variables that can slow down an individual’s trip through Troll, and most of them have little or nothing to do with the switch to electronic check-in. There is no doubt that the biggest single factor in how quickly you get trolled in is the day and time of your arrival.
Traditionally the two busiest days at Troll for any recent Pennsic (meaning they encompass three weekends) are the first Saturday and the second Saturday. Records kept at Troll show that more people troll in on each of those Saturdays than during all the others days combined.
Troll is prepared for those two Saturdays with as many trained SCA volunteers and members of Cooper’s staff as they can get. They set up and have materials ready for X number of arrivals, based on past years’ figures, and then... sometimes it just happens that a much higher number of attendees show on one of those busiest days and the workers at Troll have to scramble to adjust.
If you’ve been reading the Mayor’s posts to his blog since Pennsic XLI began, you already know that, completely unrelated to the weather on the first Saturday afternoon, the unpredicted arrival of more people than usual was a major factor in some slowdown of the check-in process.
Master Vorlin told me that they already had backup systems in place and these were actually up and running quite quickly. For the middle Saturday, now that the Troll crew has had a week to become much more familiar with the tablet program, things should go even more smoothly and speedily.
Would you like to help take the pressure off these two Saturdays next year and maybe not have to sit in a row out on the battlefield? Consider adjusting your trip to Pennsic so that you arrive on Sunday instead.

Coalition Controls Fencing Champions

On a day when traditional rivalry roles were reversed, the East-Midrealm Coalition joined forces, raced out to an early lead and was in solid control on its way to a 28-12 victory over the Atlantia-Æthelmearc Alliance to claim two war points in the Fencing Champions Tournament.
The Alliance drew first blood when the Honorable Lord Christian De Launey, the Æthelmearc Queen’s Champion, defeated Don Donovan Shinnock, the Eastrealm King’s Champion, in the opening bout.
The Coalition then reeled off 12 straight victories for a 12-1 lead and was never seriously challenged the rest of the way. The afternoon featured perhaps a dozen points of honor, with fighters giving up their own arms after taking their opponents’ and with one exception, every bout was very clean.
Lord Alexander Drache, the Midrealm Queen’s Champion, won the second bout, followed by Lord Vindris Sigtrysson, the Midrealm King’s Champion, and EK Queen’s Champion Baron Jean Paul du Casse. At that point it was 4-1 for the Coalition.
Eight more victories followed, from Jarl Arch Teryx of the Middle, Don Domin d’Aleace of the Outlands, Don Nightshade of the West, Lord Davius St. Jacques, Warder Maximilian Zauberer of the Midrealm, Lord Rurik the Red of the Middle, Lord Magnus Morti of the East, Don Alessandro Andretti of Ansteorra, and Don John Radburne of the East.
The Alliance turned the tables with victories from Lord Mateo de Cadesia of Atlantia and Æthelmearc fencers Lord Orlando di Benne del Vinta and Don Iago Benitez. The Coalition took the momentum back with victories from Don Wyatt, Don Pascual de la Mer and Don Ian Raven of Tadcaster, all Easterners, and Warder Cecil DuPoint of the Midrealm to push the lead to 16-4 at the halfway point.
Master Dante de Pietro of Atlantia defeated Sir Antonio Patrasso in a highly-contested bout. Warder Don Adam Carmichael of the Middle won, then THL Jeffrey ap Clydd of Atlantia made it 17-6. The back-and-forth continued with Don Aubulet Trapon of the Midrealm winning, followed by Lord Armand Schnitore of Atlantia and THL Connor Livingstone of Atlantia.
At that point it was 18-8, and the Coalition clinched the tournament with wins by Master Uadahlrich (Midrealm), THL Frasier MacCleod (East) and Warder Torquil Mac Galliray. Don Alfonso Pontenelli of Ealdormere was a winner, as were Lady Azriel le Fey of the Midrealm, Don Adon Aylwyn of Atlantia, Don Ogedei Becinjab of the East, and THL Kaitlin ingen Feichien of the Alliance.
Don Orlando Sforza of the East won his bout, as did Don Elyes Tagar of Artemesia, Don Hrothgar Faellen of the Alliance, Don Thore Behune of the Coalition, Lord Sean MacPhaerson of the East and THL Wistric Offun of the Alliance.

The Children’s Party: Two Perspectives

By Mary of Montevale
Features Reporter

First you get your face painted; then you fight. And finally you stand in line to get a balloon animal.
Margarita of Siena (Æthelmearc) served as the “gatekeeper” for the stage where only four or five children at a time could get their faces painted. Her father was there too, a white-bearded older gentleman who is not active in the SCA but who is attending Pennsic for the first time in order to spend time with his daughter. In fact, he had trolled in only about 20 minutes before the party began - his reaction to the War was, “Wow, this is big!”- and now he was painting young faces as cats and tigers.
It’s important to do these things in the right order, since those three stations at the party in the Barn are the busiest ones and always have really long lines. Unless you’re a boy. Then you can do the boffer fighting first, and the balloons second. Then, go back to the boffer fighting because a lot of boys don’t care that much about face painting... except if you can get to be a pirate.
Children’s Party Coordinator for Pennsic 41 Duchess Isabel Grimault (Atlantia) said the size of the boffer pit was doubled this year because it is so popular with both boys and girls. I noticed how wonderful the armored fighter volunteers were at dying with drama and style.
The party is a reason to wear your best or newest garb. That means you and your sister can wear identical blue-striped chitons. Or you, your sister, and your mom wear identical maroon red Viking dresses with brooches and swag. Mom has three strands of glass beads; you and your sister each have just one-that stuff can get heavy. Dad has a Viking tunic of the same maroon cloth, but he’s not at the party because he’s on the battlefield. Or you get to wear the hooded cloak that was bought from a merchant yesterday: one side of it is a shiny, metallic knight’s armor and helmet; the other side in a dragon with green spikes down the back and red horns on the head. Plus some more spikes, but it doesn’t let you breathe fire.
Many of the adult volunteers wear pink garb in memory of Duchess Arielle, who was the heart and soul of the Children’s Party for many years until her death from breast cancer three years ago. Some of the longest volunteer “careers” are those of members of her home barony and members of her household. One of these is HRM Brianna, currently Queen of Atlantia, the kingdom with sponsors the Party each year. Her Majesty pointed out that part of her pink ensemble this year were the custom made pink ribbon beads in the swag on her pink Viking apron dress. The dress is the same one she wore at the memorial service for Duchess Arielle in 2009.
There’s food too. You can pick a white cup with cookies, animal crackers, and goldfish crackers in it. You also get your choice of one lollipop - Blow Pop or Tootsie Roll Pop. There is water and lemonade to drink, and you can have as much of that as you want because it’s so hot in the barn. Lots of adults are using fans.
Volunteers with 15 years’ experience and other attending not only their first Pennsic Children’s Party but also their first Pennsic worked constantly to keep the refreshment table filled and everyone’s styrofoam cups refilled with water or lemonade. At least one first aid volunteer circulated with a spray bottle of cold water in order to mist down volunteers who could not easily leave their stations at various activities.
If you get tired of standing in line, there is usually no waiting at the tables where you can make things, draw shapes and glue sequins on a foam headband, and then wear it for the rest of the party. You can shoot “rocks” made of crumpled foil at a castle using a tabletop catapult. Color in a stained glass window with crayons. If you make a pipe cleaner fairy with cellophane wings you can pick the colors for the body and the frizzy hair.
The pipe cleaner fairies are a new hands-on activity this year. Presiding at that table was Eleanora Tyelmaker (East) who has done this activity for children in the Barony of Bhakhail.
Make a woven bookmark in your mom’s favorite colors to give to her. There’s a silly saying to help you get the weaving part right, “The weft goes weft to wight, and the warp goes the wong way.” Make an Italian flag on a pole with felt markers, small round gems. Girls can make the flag but call it a fan which is good because it is really hot in the barn, but it’s not good if you get glue in your veil and have to pick it out.
Chief bookmark supervisor Wynne (Atlantia) says all credit for the pun-y mnemonic does to newly-created Laurel Mistress Brienna of Lindsay (also Atlantia) who was “only” a Lady flax processor in Artisans’ Row on Monday. Lady Antoinette (Mid) was supervising the Italian flag/fan table and showed me how the banner worked as a fan as well as pointing out one flag whose creator had spent over half an hour affixing gems to his masterpiece.
You can paint a tapestry on cloth, hang it up to dry, and at the end of the party take it home. Lots of the girls chose to do the unicorn in the garden or the Celtic horse (because lots of girls like horses just as much as they like pink), but most of the boys painted the one of knights jousting on hoseback.
The pre-printed muslin tapestries were this year’s contribution by long-tome volunteer Mistress Anna Bella (East). The four patterns were designed by Mistress Ellespeth Donofrey (jousting fighters and Celtic horse) and Lady Barry White (unicorn in the garden and - of course - a cherub).
The Children’s Fete can be a lot of fun if you are at least four years old. If you’re too old, you can still get to come to the party by being a volunteer.
According to the head of Registration Cairistiona (Atlantia), serving her third year in this position, by 3 PM there were 322 children registered, a number slightly smaller than last year. Duchess Isabel, the event’s coordinator, told me there were 84 registered volunteers this year.
Oh, and you can sing a song that is part like one at home and part like Pennsic. “If you’re happy and you know it, shout ‘Vivat!’”
Queen Brianna, who was one of those singing and shouting Vivat! in the right places, says that Atlantia intends to keep on sponsoring the annual Children’s Party for as long as there is interest in having it at Pennsic.
Vivat! for Atlantia and especially for all the volunteers whose donations of time and money make it possible.

A visitor to the Barn on Monday for the Pennsic 41 A&S Exhibit could have managed to spend the entire five hours there without ever having to leave for lunch thanks to the samples available at some of the displays.
The first of these I encountered were the two substantial examples of cured pork, both thinly sliced to be available for a large number of nibblers. Just two rows away, my nose led me to the display beneath the large Atlantian A&S banner where Nikulai and Girard of Windmaster’s Hill had earthenware jugs of their brewing products. If you were over 21, you could sample four different all-grain brews (from 6% to 9% alcohol); a non-alcoholic root beer was available for all ages.
Then I spied the plates of three different period ravioli. They were the exhibit of Rose of Sternfeld (Mid) who at the age of eleven was participating in Pennsic’s adult display for the second year in a row. While Rose offered samples to passers-by, her mother Lady Caristonia Ainslie explained some of the details of the cooking project.
The French ravioli contained spinach and mint, both from the home garden. This was a late 16th c. dish for which the source was the Overture de cuisine. The Italian ravioli - mid-15th c. from the Libro di arte cocinaria, contained chicken and bacon. Both these ingredients were purchased from a local butcher, just as a person in period would have done. The English ravioli with a cheese and saffron filling was from the late 14th c and the source was Forme of Cury. Although the saffron was purchased, Rose made the cheese and the butter for this herself.
Rose also made the pasta, rolled it, and hand-filled the ravioli. She chopped ingredients by hand - no food processor was used, and she hand-ground all the herbs using a mortar and pestle. For today’s exhibit, the ravioli were boiled in water in an electric pot due to the limitations inherent in the location (the Barn).
While Rose and I talked, Baroness Arielle sampled the wares and declared the the two delicious, period vegetarian ravioli “gave her great pleasure,” and presented young Rose with a beautiful long-stemmed red rose in appreciation. Just starting seventh grade this year, the young cook also appreciates that although school has already begun, she was able to get permission from her principal for this trip to Pennsic to count as an excused absence; it is an educational trip. While she is here, she is also an enthusiastic youth fighter and served as a water bearer yesterday for the My Dad Can Beat Up Your Dad tourney. It’s not all vacation of course-her viola sat in its case under the exhibit table so that she would not miss her music practice this afternoon after the display ended at 3.
One of the displays from the West was a Gorgon pebble mosaic done in the Greek style. About three feet by two and a half, it may end up being made into a table, according to its creator Lady Nisaa Karahisari. Gorgon mosaic images have been a favorite of hers for many years, but her inspiration to make this piece was modern recent and very personal. The stunning mosaic is a gift for her husband Ajax, and she was to present it to him later in the day when he is knighted on the battlefield. (Yes, he already knows about the gift. It weighs about fifty pounds and was one of the things with him on the drive from the West Coast to Pennsic.)
There are always many eye-catching and interesting items in the A&S display. One of the most unusual was a real boar’s tusk in a wire frame created by Rignach verch Aniel Dubh of Æthelmearc. She was inspired by two Bronze Age grave finds from France and Germany, the earliest of which dates from the 16th c. B.C.E. She explained that she was drawn to the piece as a potential project in order to learn how the makers of the originals had done the wirework. The size of the tusk-about nine inches-is the determining factor for the proportions of the wirework enclosing it.
Other stunning piece on display included:
A heraldic shield bearing the Midrealm device done in size 15 myuki beads on linen and appliqued on a black velvet pouch by Lady Isabeau du Vallé (East) who has undertaken a personal quest to complete such a pouch for each kingdom of the SCA.
A dress decorated with blackwork and a wooden box cover insert in the same style which were done by Mistress Safiya bint Suleiman (Trimaris) as part of her research into the origins of blackwork in 9th-10th c. India.
Scrolls to be awarded to the winners in the three forms (spear, axe, and knife) of the Thrown Weapons Champions Tourney on Tuesday which has been made by Æthelmearc scribes, including Pani Zofia Kowaleweska and Baron Caleb Reynolds, who himself participates in Thrown Weapons.
Intaglio work by Rekon of Saaremaa (Caid) who also demonstrated her craft at Artisans’ Row on Saturday.
An exquisite miniature manuscript page which Master Ranthulfr Asparlund (Mid) had entered in a University of Michigan alumni show.
But the item attracting the most attention and the most picture-taking on Monday was the Bomticc tapestry - a tapestry history of the SCA from AS 1 through (eventually, when completed) AS 50. The project, done in the size and style of a Bayeux Tapestry, has been completed up to about AS 27 and the beginning of Gulf Wars.
Lady Jadwiga Wlodzislawska (Mid) says she began the tapestry in 2009 after learning of the AS 50 Project because it seemed to be a good way to make use of her collection of SCA historical facts and trivia, and it was something she could do in her small apartment.
The top strip of panels, stretched about 30 feet across the Barn, began (of course) with that very first tourney held on May 1, 1967, in a backyard in Oakland, CA. A panel or two later, the East Kingdom was created, and if you know your SCA heraldry and history, it is possible to count off the years as other kingdoms are born, with Æthelmearc and Ealdormere making their appearance very near the end of what has been completed on the second strip of panels.
Some sad events, such as the death of a Queen of Atenveldt in AS 20, are shown, as is at least one modern world event - the appearance of Halley’s Comet in AS 21. (The comet which appears on the original Bayeux Tapestry as a portent of the critical events of 1066 was identified centuries later as Halley’s as well.) There are also some less widely-known firsts in SCA history depicted such as the first University event, the first augmentation of arms, and the first occasion when a Pelican was awarded by an individual kingdom rather than by the Society.
Lady Jadwiga was giving “guided tours” of her amazing creation throughout the entire time the A&S exhibit was open. She explained to me that some of the information was very hard to find, and she mentioned the wikis of the kingdoms of Caid and An Tir as having been especially helpful. She also pointed out to me that her tapestry is worked on muslin the same width as the widest measure point of the actual Bayeux Tapestry, because to do it in linen would have been prohibitively expensive.
Vivats to all the artisans in Monday’s A&S Exhibit!

The Tournament of Chivalry

By Lord Jack Marvell
Features Reporter

Come call it a Golden Chain. Some call it Duke U. Whatever the name, though, the Middle Kingdom-sponsored Tournament of Chivalry held on Tuesday gave unbelted heavy fighters from across the Known World a chance to learn from more than 75 members of the Chivalry.
“This is something that we in the Middle Kingdom have done for about a decade and a half,” said Duke Ullr, the organizer of the event. “We invited every member of the Chivalry and every sitting king to hold the field... We call it a tournament in more of a sense of a showcase instead of a competition.”
About 200 unbelted fighters came to learn from the assembled knights. There were five current kings on the field, Duke Ullr said. “It is exciting stuff.”
King Savaric of the Midrealm said his kingdom relies on the tournament as a teaching tool. “It’s a beautiful thing,” he said. “All these guys are thirsty for knowledge. It is here. All they have to do is go to the well. I hope they drink deeply.”
This is the first time that the Middle Kingdom has held a Tournament of Chivalry at Pennsic. “This is our kingdom’s greatest teaching tool,” King Savaric said. “It is the best way for our knights to interact with the unbelted. Their knowledge is going to be disseminated and spread through the Known World from this one event. You’ll see it on the field next year.”
The tournament met with the approval of its participants. “It is a blast,” said Duchess Elina of Beckinham, who hails from the Midrealm. “This is the best learning environment possible. I’m on the unbelted side. I’ve got something to learn from everybody, and I always will.”
The format alternated between rounds of fighting and classes. Holding the field is a grueling experience for the participating Chivalry, who are faced with wave after wave of unbelted fighters. “They are completely wiped out, but they do it as a duty to the Crown,” Duchess Elina said.
The format gives unbelted fighters the opportunity to fight with members of the Chivalry as often as they want. “If you didn’t get enough fighting today, it’s your own fault,” Duchess Elina said.

Annual Known World Thrown Weapons Championship

By Dominic Seamor
Thrown Weapons Reporter

After three hours broiling in the hot Pennsic sun, Paul Spearman (East) emerged as the overall winner (and best rat-killer) in the 13th Known World Thrown Weapons Championship held Tuesday afternoon on the Thrown Weapons range.
Paul and the other 33 throwers faced a series of wicked challenges designed by Baron Gareth Thorne and THL Elayne Thorne (Mid). Our valiant throwers were trying to reduce the spread of the dreaded bubonic plague by killing infected animals such as rats and boars, while trying not to impede the evacuation of people from the infected areas. Each competitor threw a total of six weapons of each kind (knife, axe, and spear) for a possible maximum score of 18 points per weapon, and 54 points overall. Paul Spearman earned 40 of those 54 points on his way to the overall title, helped by a nearly-perfect score with spears. Trystan der Fackeltreager took the prize for knife, gaining 13 points. The spear title was claimed by Paganus Grimlove (Caid), who threw for 16 points. At the time of this writing, the knife score was tied between Charles (Æthelmearc) and Colin MacKenzie (East) who each have a score of 11 points. The knife title will be determined on Wednesday by a throw-off between the two gentles, who sadly were forced to leave before the tied score was announced.
While many and skillful were the throws and the throwers, the most unusually effective technique was shown by Her Excellency Baroness Robynne the Grey of Caid, who participated in the competition along with her husband, Lord Malcolm Alberic. This is Her Excellency’s first time at the War and she has found the whole experience so exhilarating that she got a little confused on one of the spear targets. Engrossed in Pennsic conversation with the thrower in the adjacent lane, Her Excellency picked up a spear and threw it, backwards. The weapon flew straight, despite her lack of time for recent practice (Her Excellency is the Kingdom Seneschal for Caid) and stuck right in the bull’s-eye of the target, with the metal point of the spear hanging in the air. In recognition of her unusual but effective method of spear throwing, and after a quick consultation with the thrown weapons rules (which state that the spear cannot touch the ground and must stick in the target, but do not specify which end of the spear must be in the target) Baron Gareth awarded the Baroness the full three points for her throw. Despite the three points, Her Excellency did not win any of the categories, but still greatly enjoyed the competition. We wish Her Excellency well and hope she enjoys the rest of her visit to Pennsic.
All of the winners in the tourney were awarded illuminated scrolls prepared by Pani Zofia Kowaleweska and Baron Caleb Reynolds (Æthelmearc). Vivats for the generosity and skill of the scribes, and congratulations to the victors.

Coalition Takes Bridges, Leads War

Brave fighters battle for the bridges in close combat.

By Master Liam St. Liam
Battlefield Reporter

After the Eastern-Midrealm Coalition made easy work of Tuesday’s first bridge battle, King Savaric of the Middle Kingdom and King Kenric of the East sent the Southern Oaken army across the field, making the rest of the afternoon much more competitive.
“They fought very well for us, and they fought very well against us,” King Kenric said after the coalition posted a 3-1 victory, but had to work much harder for those second two points. One of the battles, the fourth, was voided, because of a rules interpretation issue.
“I’ve been at Pennsic a long time, and this was an inspiring day,” said Duke Henri d’Artois, the battle commander for Æthelmearc. “I got to fight against some of the guys I consider my heroes.”
Duke Henri got that chance because the Midrealm commander, Sir Farthegn, who developed the battle plan for the Coalition, rotated his units from bridge to bridge. “We had our opportunities. It was just awesome. All of our regional units did a great job. Our guys were every bit as good as I knew they would be.”
Duke Jason of Atlantia, the other Allied main commander, echoed Duke Henri on praising his troops. “I consider our guys to be a professional army.”
Duke Henri sent a thank-you to the units from Mountain Confederation. Duke Jason said that while all units on the Allies’ side fought well, he was especially pleased with the work Trimaris and Meridies did on their bridge.”

From the Coalition side
“It was a chess match,” said Master Feral, the Eastern warlord. “We had the bigger pieces, but they had more pieces. The Midrealm battle plan was a good one, to switch from bridge to bridge.” Master Feral was impressed with all of the Eastern armies, and with the Midrealm as well. Ansteorra and Calontir stayed in the middle of things. Rome also made a difference on the Coalition side.
One tactic the Coalition used was to hold certain units in reserve, particularly Duke Andreas’ Unsterblichen. But Duke Andreas said his army didn’t do it alone.
“You have to talk about Darkmoon,” Duke Andreas said. “We followed in the success of Darkmoon.”
Today’s war points include the thrown weapons, archery, and fencing champions, as well as four heavy weapons champions’ battles.
The unofficial war point count has the Coalition leading, 12-4.
