An Epic End

EpicEnd.jpg
Quintus of Vitos Minions resting as the battle rages on.

Written by: Uilleam Friseal

Mist hung over the battlefield along with dark ominous clouds. Horns signaled the beginning of battle was near and combatants swarmed to take their positions. Seconds before the cannon fired, a craze of war cries and chanting began, everyone was ready for the final battle.
Both armies raced to meet each other, single soldiers reached the breach points and began fighting immediately followed by waves of their allies meeting with a thunderous clash. Quickly, the Grand Alliance took control of the first breach point. Few fighters are left at the breach to maintain control, as the rest of the survivors moved forward in an attempt to flank their enemy at another breach.
In an attempt to keep the fight going, holds are called at each breach when needed. However, all fighting stopped for a medical hold as EMS entered the field. The field erupts in cheers as the fallen fighter returns to his feet and is escorted off the field to rest.
Chaos resumed at the contested breach points once the hold was lifted. With only a small number of fighters were able to attack through the breach, archers and siege engine operators began to launch full attacks in an attempt to thin the lines.
After some time, the Allied Kingdoms regrouped at the only non contested point and launched a powerful counter attack that managed to bring the fight back to the breach point. The attack was soon met by a charge from Grand Alliance reinforcements, who managed to punch a hole in the lines of their enemies, and regain control of the point.
This battle quickly became a stalemate as reinforcements from both armies reached the frontlines too quickly for archers to keep up. Flag stands began to break as the fighting only became more ferocious, fighters attempting to plant the flag were quickly squashed. Before long there were no standing flags, but the combat raged on just as strongly.
On opposite sides of the field, both armies employed similar tactics as large unit shield formations charged and took opposing breach points. The center breach is another story, as neither army was able to mount a successful attack, the point remained contested until the end.
As time ran low, combat became more vicious and it was clear that fighters began to give everything they had left. However, when the cannon fired and dust settled there were only two flags standing. One for the Allied Kingdoms, and one for the Grand Alliance.

Battle of Champions

Prior to muster, armies convened under their Kings and Queens to receive words of inspiration. Following a brief instruction from Marshals, all fighters took their positions. They began to chant and beat their shields, as they readied themselves to charge. At the cannon, fighters from the Grand Alliance raced to meet their waiting foe. The charge was quickly pushed back by a dense shield wall, which marched strong and managed to push directly to the flag for the first capture for the Allied Kingdoms.
Fighters and Marshals cooperated to reset the field as quickly as possible. “Lay on” was called, and both armies quickly advanced to meet in the center of the field. Again, with the power of strong formations, the forces from the Allied Kingdoms were able to quickly push their foes back to their flag, allowing the needed chance to capture their second flag.
The commanders of the Allied Kingdoms seemed to have drilled formation into the minds of their soldiers, as strong shield walls and spears worked together. However, the Grand Alliance found a weak point and launched a powerful counter attack, causing the wall to crumble. Following a ferocious assault at their enemies’ flag, the Grand Alliance captured their first flag.
With a new strategy, the Grand Alliance was able to blitz through their enemies’ lines and capture another flag within moments of the call to lay on.
Following the upset of the previous bout, the Allied Kingdoms sprinted to meet their combatants before they could begin to charge. However, the Grand Alliance stood strong and began to move as one unit to push their enemies all the way back to their flag. After an intense skirmish another flag was captured for the Grand Alliance.
Armies sprinted to meet each other near the center line for an intense encounter. Whether planned or not, it was an effective strategy for the Allied Kingdoms, who were able to use the confusion to slip a scout through in order to capture yet another flag. As the flag was captured, a medical hold was called, and a fighter was escorted from the field for a minor injury.
Field reset took almost no time as soldiers moved quickly to ensure as much fighting as possible. Seconds after the next bout began, another brief hold was called to ensure fallen fighters were uninjured. After the hold, fighting became intensely aggressive around the Grand Alliance flag, allowing for another capture and an even score.
With an even number of flags for both armies, they switched back to defensive tactics in an attempt to keep things close. Holding tight formations, the Allied Kingdoms slowly pushed the fight to their enemies’ flag. Once there, it was only moments before a scout was seen sprinting back with another captured flag. On his way, the scout hit the ground hard and a brief medical hold was called to ensure the fighters’ safety. Once the scout stood, “lay on” was called and the flag was captured.
With “lay on” called, the Grand Alliance sent a blitz unit to breach the enemies shield wall. With the line broken, armies split into attack and defense units. The Allied Kingdoms stopped the blitz, but were unable to stop a scout from slipping through and capturing another flag.
Armies reverted to tactics from earlier in the battle, both taking heavy defensive formations, meeting in the middle of the field with a thunderous clash. The fighters endured the longest bout of the battle, but slowly fatigue set in and the Grand Alliance reformed their strong line and pushed hard to take one of the final flags.
Marshals announced the last bout and fighters immediately began war cries and pounding their shields like drums, gathering the last of their strength to make their enemies work for victory. With all the built up energy, the armies met near the middle of the battlefield and held unyielding formations. However, an unnoticed flank opened and a small unit from the Grand Alliance took the opportunity to sneak past the fighting and move to take the undefended flag. Before the flag could be captured, a cannon blast signaled the end of the battle.
Following the battle, Marshals confirmed that the Grand Alliance had won the War Point.
Fight with honor. Die with Valor. Arise and rejoice with your friends.

Og on Alcohol

I am missing Pennsic, again. I miss it daily. My morning starts sitting in my OG throne on the front porch watching the sun come up (much as I do at Pennsic). I have another chair on the back porch to watch the sun go down. I miss Pennsic! I miss the Pennsic people. I miss the Pennsic adventure.
A year and a half ago, I was involved in an industrial accident. Dropping over a hundred pounds on your chest isn’t easy, but I did it; OG can accomplish anything. My neck was injured in this accident, so bad I can no longer hold my head up on its own. My chin hits my chest and I stare at the floor. Lots of PAIN.
Dozen of doctors; I am on oxygen 24-7 and a BI PAP at night. I hate all of it!
I have lost over 100 pounds. YEA! It is due to trouble swallowing. Me walking 100 yards, I am done for the day. The company retired me after a year, so now I have all the time in the world to watch the sun go up and down. I had to give up driving; my hands are numb, no strength. My doctors still have no clue.
I try not to complain. I am very lucky to still be here. Am I going to get better? DAMN RIGHT I AM!!!
I will return to Pennsic, the SCA, and Pennsic is my home. Everywhere I look I see memories.
You have all been a big and wonderful part of my life. Thank you all.
Lords and Ladies, charge your glasses and raise them high,
To all of you have fun play nice. See you next year, God willing.
Drink well,
Drink often,
Drink with OG.

Follow the Hares!

by Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor-in-Cheif, PI

Tomorrow morning, while many are still sleeping off the previous night’s entertainment, a group of intrepid runners (and a few walkers) will take to the roads of Pennsic in the fifth annual Unofficial Pennsic Half Marathon. Last year, Queen Thora Heri of Atlantia led the racers in the roughly 13.1 miles around the Pennsic campground. This year, her twin sister Queen Signy reigns in Atlantia and will take the same role. Countess Thora, although she has been injured, is planning to be there as well, and both have been instrumental in pre-race planning.

Last year, about 40 participants started the race, with between 20-25 finishing. Runners are encouraged to participate in period clothing, although it is not required, and when it comes to footwear, all are expected to use whatever keeps their feet happy. No official times are kept, and the race is open to all, both walkers and runners. even if participants do not complete the full distance of three loops around the entire campground and one smaller loop around the top of the Serengeti. Those taking part are asked to sign in at Chirurgeon’s Point before the 8 am start, where Morwenna Trevethan will be keeping a log of all participants, and to sign off at the end.
Anyone who’s run or walked in any long-distance race knows how important support staff are to a successful event. As it has grown from its word-of-mouth status over the last couple of years, the Pennsic Half Marathon has begun to develop a support apparatus. This year, for the first time the route will be marked with race signage, painted by Queen Signy, which will be put up (and taken down) from the course by Countess Thora and Baron William de Montegilt. The signs feature a running hare, although an occasional tortoise has been included as well, “to be placed at the bottom of a hill,” said Queen Signy.

Participants have been encouraged to bring their own water and to refill at Chirurgeon’s Point, the start and finish line of the event, but a number of camps that border the route, such as Moose Lodge in the B blocks and Talfryn at the extreme north end of the campground, will be set up to provide water to runners and walkers.
And anyone who has participated in a walk or run knows the importance of swag. Lady Caroline Forbes of Oxfordshire is making participation pins for everyone who starts the race.” I think of them as a pilgrim’s badge. Hopefully, people who do one loop this year will be able to come back next year and do two laps or the whole thing,” she said. Finishers will receive a pewter bunny token made by Mistress Serafina Alamanni.

There is now a Facebook page for those training for the event (just look for Unofficial Pennsic Half Marathon), where participants have been sharing their progress and cheering each other on. It’s also helped Queen Signy, Countess Thora, and Master Philip organize the event and keep track of who was doing what.
Countess Thora challenged the Royalty of the Known World to participate. “We have had two sitting Queens (me and Ariella of Æthelmearc) finish the half-marathon to date, but no Kings, Princes or Princesses. We hope that changes.” She also mentioned that both she and Countess Ariella are the only two she is aware of to have completed the “Pennsic Ironman” – the half marathon and fighting in every rapier and armoured combat war point.

Didn’t train at all? Didn’t know there was a half-marathon until you read this article? Come on out and walk/run as much as you can, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow endurance enthusiasts.

HOLD! Changes for Heavy Fighters

By: Uilleam Friseal
Battle Field Reporter, PI

Marshals at Inspection Point seem to be handling fighters very smoothly this Pennsic. However, Mother Nature has forced a slight change for those heavy fighters hoping to begin wailing on each other tomorrow is Duke Timothy’s Ædult Swim event has been moved to Saturday the 5th.
The marshals also want fighters to know that they MUST take Battle Road when making their trek to the Woods Battle. Any fighters, even those in large groups, will be turned back and redirected towards Battle Road.

Fighters beware: if you are found removing a flag from its stand, or holding a flag out of its stand as a tactical advantage you will be removed from battle, have your sticker pulled and be sent to Marshal’s Court. The flag must remain in its stand unless removed for the reason of scoring. If a scoring flag drops, the point will be considered null unless it is returned to the stand first.

On August 7th, the marshals request that all fighters participating in the Bridge Battle assist field setup by bringing one hay bale to the marked lines on the battlefield. Fighters should also help with hay bales during field reset. No archers are allowed on bridges, and siege engines must remain 50 ft from the bridge edges.
Fight with honor. Die with Valor. Arise and rejoice with your Friends.

Champions Compete

Knights defending themselves having being legged in the Belted Champions battle.

By Uilleam Friseal
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent
It was a chilly morning and a slow start to the Unbelted Champions battle. Drums filled the air alongside a quiet chatter from amongst the fighters. Lay on was called and fighters from both sides burst forth toward each other, meeting with a bang that could be felt in the chest. With just one hold called, the ferocious fighting ended in only a few short minutes and tabards of Midrealm fighters could be seen standing victorious as the dust settled.
Shortly after, the field was cleared and the unbelted alternates took their places, preparing to fight. Marshals signaled the beginning of the battle and soldiers took off with a flash, racing to meet their opponents. The battle was over as quickly as it began with the Midrealm alternates as the last fighters standing.
Once more the battlefield was cleared and the Belted Champions began lining up to charge. A horn marked the beginning of the battle and fighters charged at full force, meeting on the line of skirmish with shields clashing. Fighters began pushing through on both sides, and it took some time before there was any decisive movement from either side. Once the line began to fall it was clear that the Grand East-Middle-Ealdormere Alliance was moving towards victory yet again.
At long last the field was cleared and the Heroic Champions bouts were set to begin. It was clear why fighters were chosen for these fights as their strategic thought process could be observed in every slight movement. Methodically and with great precision, the champions chose each blow carefully, waiting for their opponent to let their guard down for just a moment. It took a great deal of time for these skilled fighters to get through the full list, but in the end the Grand Alliance had taken all three of the Armored War Points.

Inspiration and Advice at the Great Hall

Lord Edward Ranulf displays his mustards and sauces.

Editor-in-Chief, Pennsic Independent
Once again, artisans from around the Known World came together in the Great Hall to show off their work at the annual A&S Exhibition—but this year, they had a chance to receive focused feedback from a fellow artisan. Lady Kataryn Mercer told me that the “A&S Consult Table” is a new idea that has been done in the East Kingdom, and now has been expanded to bring in expertise from all kingdoms at Pennsic.
“We are giving artisans the opportunity to get the kind of feedback they might get at a high-level competition without the stress of competing,” she explained. This might take the form of assistance or feedback with documentation, presentation, craftsmanship—anything the artisan might desire. “It helps the artisan to grow and the A&S community to train new judges.” Judges—or more correctly, consultants—volunteered after a call went out online, and came from five kingdoms.
Baroness Lucia de Moranza of Ealdormere, a past Kingdom Pentathlon winner, volunteered to act as one of the “consultants.” “It’s been interesting to see the interkingdom anthropology. Competitions differ widely from kingdom to kingdom,” Lucia said. But useful feedback crosses kingdom lines, “and people don’t bring bad work to Pennsic.” She added that she is interested in starting a similar program in her kingdom after seeing how the A&S Consult Table worked.
Lady Adele Lochlane of the Kingdom of Atlantia acted as one of the organizers of the event. She mentioned that about 90 artisans displayed their works on Sunday. Also new this year, participants had a chance to get their creations photographed by a professional photographer.
With 90 entries to choose from, it’s always difficult to choose just a few to highlight, but these were some that caught my eye:
Michael Rhys Armitage from the Middle Kingdom was exhibiting several icons. He started painting in this style, using oils, raised plaster with incising on plaster, and gold gilding, two years ago when his squire brother won Crown. “Sir Nikolai had a Russian persona, so I adapted an icon of St. Michael to portray him instead.” He subsequently did two more icons of Midrealm kings, including the fascinating St. Christopher and St. Stephen icon on display Sunday. “Because of a mistranslation, St. Christopher is portrayed as a dog-headed saint in the Eastern tradition.” St. Stephen was transformed into King William, but the dog-headed saint was left as-is.
Hungry for more? Lord Edward fitzRanulf of the Middle Kingdom whetted appetites with his display of mustards and sauces to sample. He’s been making mustards for ten years and described the process: “Take mustard seed, grind it, and add vinegar. It will taste awful. Allow it to age, and add bread crumbs and other ingredients, such as ginger, pepper, cinnamon, sherry, sugar, or honey, and it is transformed.” Being a fan of cinnamon, I sampled the camelyne and hippocras mustards. They were indeed transformed and not at all awful. He was also displaying eight sauces—seven from period recipes—noting that the camelyne, ginger and green sauces were the standard universal medieval sauces.
Ishiyama-roku-I Gen’tarou Yori’ie of the kingdom of Æthelmearc displayed a selection of braided cords in the style known as kote-uchi, a Japanese technique similar to fingerloop braiding only recently rediscovered a few years ago but documentable to period. “This technique had been lost to general knowledge—it was often a ‘family secret’ as it could bring in a lot of money particularly given how much cording would go into Japanese armor. The technique can use up to 15 cords if done by one person, even more if done by two or more.
Jorunn nic Lochlainn from the Kingdom of Atlantia has been making gloves for over 30 years, and used the exhibit to encourage people to attend the 4-hour-long class she is teaching on Tuesday. “I want to teach people how to make period gloves—encourage people, make it easier for them, and help them get a pair that fits.” Her exhibit included slashed German gloves, Elizabethan gloves with extended fingers, gloves commissioned as gifts, and a pair of sealskin gloves. After learning the technique in Thule, Greenland, from an Inuit artisan, she was gifted with the sealskin to make her own. Her class will also talk about the role of gloves in history and society.
All of the artisans I talked to were very pleased with this year’s event, and especially hoped the consult table idea would take off and grow. If you would like any more information on A&S consult tables, contact Lady Kataryn at kataryn@kitsclothingcollection.com, or find her on Facebook as kataryn.mercer.

Games Bring Pennsic Joy

PLACED Favor.jpg
The Queen’s favor, prize pins and bingo tokens.

Editor-in-Chief, PI

How well do you know Pennsic and the Society? Have you ever asked a Queen for her favour?
Æthelmearc Hospitality has some fun diversions to tempt newcomers as well as those looking to “go beyond your comfort zone,” according to Lady Lasairfhiona inghean Aindriasa, who along with Lady Dubheasa inghean Dubgaill has undertaken a mission to demystify the Æthelmearc Royal encampment. “We want people to know anyone can come into Æthelmearc Royal,” said Lady Dubheasa. “We have water and lemonade, and a charging station for electronics, and we welcome all regardless of kingdom.”
And there are games! You can pick up a Bingo card to play Pennsic Bingo. You can fill your card by taking classes (multiple spaces available for multiple classes), volunteering, attending a battle, visiting the Bog at night, finding the flushies, finding a baron or baroness, helping someone in need, visiting the Coopers’ Store…the list goes on and on! Any vertical, diagonal, or horizontal row wins a token cast by His Highness Sir Gareth, and you can play as many times as you like. The bingo card is family-friendly, and people can play in groups—all participants will receive a token if they play and get a winning card.
“This encourages people to get out, see Pennsic, maybe learn how to identify Royalty, peers, or protégés,” said Lady Dubheasa. “It also gives people a reason to approach others without being afraid,” said Lady Lasaifhiona.
But what if that person is a Queen? If you spot a Queen wearing a gold favour with a crown pin on it, that means she is playing a second game and is just waiting for someone to come ask her for that favour. “We have asked the Queens of several kingdoms to participate, and many have agreed,” said Lady Lasairfhiona. During Peace Week, the Queen and Princess of Æthelmearc have been wearing the favour, and it has been claimed every day.
How can you play? If you see a Queen wearing the favour, approach Her and ask her if you can have it. She may give it to you, or she may assign you a short quest in order to gain it. Once you have it, return it to Æthelmearc Hospitality, where you can exchange it for a jeweled crown pin (either gold or silver, your choice).
Newcomer’s Point has taken on responsibility for a third game devised by these ladies, a scavenger hunt. “We hope these games will continue in the future,” said Lady Dubheasa, “and that they help rejuvenate the joy of Pennsic.”
A few bingo cards are available at the Pennsic Independent office, or stop by Æthelmearc Royal to pick one up.

Inaugural Pennsic Helga Ball Tourney Kicks Off

By: Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor-in-Chief, the Pennsic Independant

A field. A head of cabbage. Two teams of five women—one designated the Helgas, the other, the Olgas. The objective: Move the cabbage past the goal line without touching it with your hands. You may carry it in your apron or dress, run with it, or pass it to teammates. Each time a goal is scored, a volunteer will shout “Helga ball!” or “Olga ball!” depending on who scored the goal. This is Helga Ball, a bit of a mix between soccer and rugby, and tomorrow at 12:30 pm on the Main Battlefield, teams will be vying for the crown of champion of the first Helga Ball Tournament to be held at Pennsic.
Organizers Maighstir Liam MacantSaoir and Baroness Constance Glyn Dwr, their household Clann Crann Bethadh, and the Barony Marche of the Debatable Lands are the sponsors of the tourney. “This is the first Helga Ball tournament at Pennsic that we know of, “ said Maighstir Liam, “but it’s been played at other SCA events, including a tournament at Estrella War.” So far, seven teams have signed up, with the mercenary household Black Talon being the first, but there is no requirement to preregister—teams of five women may sign up at the list table tomorrow. Those without teams who wish to play may also show up and perhaps assemble a team of others in the same situation. A number of volunteers will also be assisting as referees.
Participants and observers are also encouraged to bring toiletries to donate to Paladin’s Pantry. “Financially insecure families that use the food bank can often not afford other items needed for daily living, including soaps, shampoos, feminine hygiene products, and toilet paper,” said Maighstir Liam. Donations at the tourney “will help fill the gap for these families.”
The victorious team will not only earn bragging rights as the first Helga Ball champion of Pennsic, but will also receive an award. So come out, put together a team or cheer for your favorites, and witness what might just be a new Pennsic tradition

Fields of Friendship

Edited Breaking of Arrow to start the war 8-5-2017.jpg
Known world royals of cially starting the Pennsic War with the break of the Peace Arrow.

By: Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor-in-Chief, Pennsic Independent

“We traveled from lands, as you do, expecting the East and Middle to be locked in fierce but predictable combat. Something has gone wrong… but it is a joy to see.” King Gabriel of Ansteorra’s words, while making his declaration of alliance, sum up what is different about this Pennsic and the Opening Ceremonies that took place last night.
Æthelmearc opened the ceremonies by entering onto the field in front of the fort, followed by Northshield, Atlantia, and the other allied kingdoms—everyone save the East Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and Ealdormere. The Crown of each Kingdom (or their representatives) took their places behind Their Majesties of Æthelmearc, Atlantia, and Northshield. The Kingdoms of the East, Middle, and Ealdormere then entered the field together, the Middle on the west side, the East on the east side, and Ealdormere in the middle.
Once all were assembled, King Timothy of Æthelmearc greeted the assembled Crowns and populace. “Nobody heard me tell people to get off my lawn… so I guess it is to be war. “ After much laughter, he continued. “These are special lands. I can’t think of anywhere else where men and women have died on the battlefield, gotten back up, and hugged their opponents.”
He then thanked the collective Crowns who had gotten together and “planned a grand war,” and wished those who had come from afar “the event of a lifetime.”
The Kha-Khan of the Great Dark Horde then brought forward the War Arrow, which was much longer than usual. King Timothy invited the Crowns of Atlantia, Northshield, East, Middle, and Ealdormere to join him in the breaking of the arrow. It broke into six pieces, with each kingdom receiving a piece. “Mine’s so short!” quipped King Ioannes of the East.
With most of the alliances already known, there was a great amount of levity this year in the declarations of alliances. King Alexander of Caid stated, glancing nervously at the sky, that “the great and powerful kingdom of Caid had come to this cold, wet land fearing death from the sky,” but would still declare for Æthelmearc, Atlantia, and Northshield. Prince Franco of Trimaris extolled the “valor and ferocity of the Trimarian swamplords. Duchess Siobhan of Drachenwald stated that they had sent a tiny contingent of two, and they would fight with friends. “You will see them sprinkled on the fields,” prompting King Ioannes of the East to again quip, “Sprinkles are for winners.” King Steffan of Lochac stated that in his kingdom, there wasn’t often a chance to meet with Royalty, and when the Kings met, “It was wonderful, but boys will be boys and it turned into some shoving, and all was good and well until someone yelled ‘light’ and look where we are now.”
Once all kingdoms had made their declarations, the Tuchux were called forward and materialized from the crowd to make their declaration that they would fight with King Timothy and King Cuan of Atlantia. The Kingdom of Acre honored their ancient treaty, with Queen Vivian declaring for the East. The Great Dark Horde, having “entertained many wonderful offers,” opted to “take up the Middle Kingdom on their most generous offer—and fight with Atlantia.”
House Darkyard then brought forward the War Horn, and Her Majesty Signy of Atlantia stepped forward to sound a high, clear note, signifying the start of War. But King Timothy concluded the ceremony, “Your Majesties, I am pleased to call you and your subjects my friends. Let that thought guide our actions at this War. Will you walk out with me?”
And the Crowns of Atlantia, Northshield, Ealdormere, the East, the Middle and Æthelmearc stepped forward and left the ceremony together.
There may, however, have been a song entitled “Æthelmearc is Awesome” accompanying the recessional.

The King of Meat Grinders

By: Clarice D’allaines Le Compt
Rapier Reporter for The Pennsic Independent

The meat grinder of all meat grinders, the battle of La Rochelle. Attackers have unlimited resurrections while the defending team in the castle only have two resurrections for a total of three lives. La Rochelle is my favorite battle at the Pennsic War. Though it is not a War Point, it does speak for itself in terms of, “Oh my God, I’m going to die...a lot!”
Two sides: this year it was green and orange. Fencers including myself wore a band with a color on it marking what side you were on. The objective, after the “earth shattering kaboom,” is to take the castle as fast as you can by killing everyone beyond the wall and side port. As a defender, you defend the castle as best you can against a mob of screaming, charging fencers who have unlimited lives, and will inevitably kill you anyway.
Starting out behind the castle wall defending, many people charge to the kill pocket (a small semicircle of death) or the side port. Being the ambitious young fencer I am, I love to fill in where I’m needed. But when it comes to attacking, I’m all about jumping into the line of fire, (but darn those rubber band guns!), to create an opening for my fellow fencers behind me. Nothing like the feeling of unlimited death!
At the end, when all the defenders have been killed, the marshals call an end to the fighting and mark the time. We take a break and switch sides, only to do it all over again. The time it took us to take the castle, you ask? Well, the green team won by holding the castle for 11 minutes while the orange team held the castle for eight minutes. Three measly minutes and they would have had it. That, my friends, is the battle of La Rochelle.

The Children’s Fete on Wednesday morning was a rousing success. Held in the Great Hall, volunteers from across the Known World came together to offer a variety of activities for the children of our society.
At the beginning of the day, families were able to pre-register at the Great Hall at 9 in the morning and then were sent on to Family Point, where the Pennsic Mayor led a parade commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Children’s Fete up to the Great Hall and onto the day’s activities.
There was food (hosted by Sacred Stone Barony of Atlantia), arts and crafts of various types (hosted by several different baronies from Atlantia and the East Kingdom), face painting, music, and activities to let the children run around and be active, which included a bouncy castle and “palio races” (stick horses). The musicians not only provided an enjoyable atmosphere but also hosted an instrument petting zoo so that the children could get a chance to touch, strum, and drum on a variety of instruments.
While many of the activities were hosted by groups, a few intrepid individuals ran activity stations themselves, including origami, hosted by Rose Barefoot, the palio races, hosted by Baron Alric, and the ever popular “Whack a Warrior” arena, hosted by Dame Morwenna, with assistance from support and fighters from six kingdoms.
The youngest of the Fete’s individual activity hosts were Elizabeth McClaine, 12, and Kara, 13, both from Atlantia. The two girls took it upon themselves to run a station to apply temporary tattoos to all and sundry and appeared to be quite enjoying themselves. While both of them have been Pennsic attendees since birth, this year is the first they’ve been able to volunteer and said they decided to volunteer at the Fete because “it was the nice thing to do.”
The yearly “Whack a Warrior” arena is one of the most popular stops at the Children’s Fete. Dame Morwena says she’s been running that part of the event for seven or eight years and that several of the fighters who participated today have been assisting since the beginning. With the scheduling of the woods battle, there were definitely a few faces missing, but with eleven fighters there overall there were plenty of people for the children to run ragged. Dame Morewena cheerfully commented, “The ability to die many creative, dramatic deaths is invaluable to the kids, and often harder on the fighters than doing a round in the woods battle!” This year was the first year that the kingdom of Lochach participated, with a fighter who’s badge read only “Captain Lochach” as the representative for his kingdom.
This year, there was a great effort made to streamline security and keep the entrance lines down. The back doors of the Great Hall had netting strung across them to allow airflow, light, and emergency exit while keeping people from walking through the building (or small children from making a break for the outdoors!) A double medallion wristband system was in place to make sure that children left with the appropriate adults, as well. Each child who came in was given a wristband marked with their adult guardian’s medallion number and each adult received one with their children’s number, as an easy method to cross check that children were leaving with the same adult who brought them. The entrance was also arranged so that access was controlled and limited to those who had checked in, but streamlined enough that no family had to wait in line longer than five minutes once the event began.
Overall, the event was smoothly handled, entertaining a total of 294 children and 239 adults, with a total of 116 volunteers from 9 kingdoms, including Atlantia, the East, the Middle, AEthelmearc, Lochac, Ansteorra, Outlands, Northshield, and Meridies. The organizers I spoke with were very pleased to have had such good interkingdom cooperation and hope that next year there will be an even broader representation – and that the Fete wouldn’t conflict with the woods battle!
Lady Jacintha of Highland Foorde, the main coordinator, has offered her email address so that anyone wishing to volunteer next year or provide feedback on this year’s events may contact her at jacintha74@gmail.com.

Medics to the Rescue at Woods

By Uilleam Friseal
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Marshals and medics were busy strategizing for the worst case scenario as fighters hurried into the woods. The buzz of excitement could be heard emanating from the resurrection point as soldiers gathered for final instruction from the Marshals. At the 10 minute warning combatants made themselves ready, checking that they had all their armor and that their weapons in proper condition to fight. When the five minute warning was announced there was an eruption of war cries and household units taking formation, making final decisions on strategy. As time got even closer units moved into the woods, taking stance at the edge of the resurrection line to pound their shields and intimidate their opponents.
At the sound of the cannon the soldiers charged deep into the woods towards their foe, the trees swayed as large formations plowed through to join the fight. Watching the Woods Battle from resurrection point was not unlike a battle scene from a movie, fighters shouting orders to regain formation and to hold specific positions.
The bees were almost more dangerous for combatants than the fighting itself, with an uncountable amount of fighters rushing back to resurrection point in order to remove stinging bees from under their armor. Commander Random Wronghand of House Clovenshield reported that combat to that point was fairly clean and featured a lot of back and forth between both sides. He also reported that all fighters he encountered, friend or foe, were in high spirits and enjoying what is a favourite battle to many combatants.
It took longer than Marshals expected, but a hold was called for multiple injury checks. Medics rushed into the woods, fighters forcing each other off the road to ensure medics could reach the injured as quickly as possible. Just after the hold was lifted the cannon sounded as a total hold so that Marshals could check banners, but some fighters ignored the cannon and continued to fight. In the confusion of another medical hold that was made necessary, combatants once again ensured the road was clear for quick evacuation.
As time ran on, more and more fighters began to ignore holds, even when a medical hold was called. However, reports from the battle heard at resurrection point told of high spirits and great fun being had by every encountered fighter.
With ignored holds, it was made very clear that many fighters waited all year to spend as much time as possible fighting in the Woods Battle. By the end, resurrection point was filled with exhausted fighters, who used the last of their energy to keep giant smiles on their faces.
Marshals announced after deliberation of contested points that the battle ended in a tie, with two War Points going to each Alliance. Evelyn and I send wishes for a speedy recovery to the fighters removed from battle.

Allied Kingdoms Stand Victorious

By Uilleam Friseal
Battlefield Reporter,
Pennsic Independent

The sound of bagpipes, drums, and trumpets coursed through the air as fighters took position on the battlefield. Commanders could barely give orders over the sounds of soldiers beating their shields and chanting for their houses. The cannon fired and a formation from the Grand Alliance exploded toward the Tuchux warband, they met with a hard collision of fighters attempting stampede through each other. Slowly the armies began to intertwine until the battle appeared as a large free-for-all. Many fallen fighters later, a flank opened behind the lines of the Grand Alliance and the opportunity was quickly taken. Moments later the Allied Kingdoms had won the first battle.
Both armies applied a more controlled approach to the second battle, with clear formations holding together upon approaching the line of skirmish. A blitz emerged from the Grand Alliance and fighting began on one side of the field. On the other side of the battlefield, two large formations from each side hold position away from the line of skirmish and send single fighters to meet in combat. The winner decided the charge, and as the fallen was cleared from the field, the Grand Alliance began its full charge towards a waiting shield wall. A hold was called so Marshals could regain control of the field. Soon after fighting restarted reinforcements began to diminish, leading to the remaining fighters gathering in the middle of the field until the Allied Kingdoms had the last fighters standing.
At the cannon blast a large group of Grand Allience allies took formation and marched to the line of skirmish and aligned as a shield wall to wait for the opposing charge. The Allied Kingdoms replied in kind with a lightning charge, meeting the shield wall of their enemies with a serious attack. Hold was called to clear the pileup of fallen fighters mid field. As fighting resumed, formations were abandoned and the field was littered with small groups of combatants. The last of the fighters dwindled away until only those from the Grand Alliance could be seen standing.
Commanders regained control of their soldiers as strong formations slowly approached from both sides. Meeting with less immediate force, the battle was no less vicious. Hold was called and EMS entered the field to inspect a fighter. The hold was quickly lifted and fighting resumed, however less strategic. Fighters of the Grand Alliance set forth a final charge, but dwindling reinforcements left too few to overtake the remaining fighters of the Allied Kingdoms.
Remember: Fight with honor. Die with valor. Arise and rejoice with your friends.

Battle of Bridges

Bridge Battle combatant struggling to fend off overwhelming forces.

By Uilleam Friseal
Battlefield Reporter, Pennsic Independent

Trumpets signaled the one-minute warning that battle was about to begin. With that, commanders could be heard frantically calling orders for fighters to take position in front of the bridge entrances. Seconds before battle began; the field was filled with war cries and the pounding of weapons on shields. At the cannon, ballista bolts and arrows filled the sky, stopping fighters in their tracks. A strong-armed group of fighters from the Grand Alliance plowed through and broke to the other side of the first bridge. Hold was quickly called for the marshals to regain control of the battlefield as it was clear fighters were getting heated, not following Hold orders until trumpets were forced to signal. With the hold lifted, waiting reinforcements from the Allied Kingdoms wasted no time and charged to push back against the breakthrough and retake the lost bridge.
New formations appeared, making it clear that fresh orders had been given during the battlefield reset. At the sound of the cannon fighters sprinted onto the bridges and met like waves crashing on shore. The fallen quickly piled up and a brief hold was called to clear them. Following the hold, polearms from both sides took to the front and attempted to control any blitz. Shield walls quickly formed, though the pole arm fighters maintained such a powerful stance that shield walls called polearm reinforcements to become fulcrum formations. This created a pileup of fallen, and a hold was again called for them to be cleared. Few fighters remained standing, but those who were began one last push. A cannon blast signaled that time had out, and the Grand Alliance held control of more bridges.
It was clear that fighters saved their breath for this last battle. Bolts and arrows darkened the sky as the fighting began. With a sprinting charge two formations from the Grand Alliance took quick control of two bridges. Giving it all they had left, fighters of the Allied Kingdoms took control of several bridges, but with few reinforcements remaining they were unable to hold their stance. The Grand Alliance quickly made claim to three bridges and held them until the cannon signaled the end of battle.

Axe Maidens, Avast!

Edited Estrogen and Axes.jpg

Axes in the air and the table full of prizes at Estrogen and Axes.

By Magistra Nicolaa de Bracton
Editor-in-Chief, Pennsic Independent

It’s all about the axe.
For at least 16 years, the ladies of the Known World have been gathering in the annual Estrogen and Axes tournament to enjoy the unparalleled feeling of axes flying through the air to bury themselves into wooden stumps with a satisfying “thunk!”
The Kingdom of Ealdormere has sponsored the tournament for the past six years with the support of the Axe Maidens of Ealdormere. Once a woman has participated in the tournament at least one time, she is given a special green favour, as well as dubbed with her “axe name” by Viscountess Axflaeda when she leaves the range. Those from other kingdoms are also christened with axe names as well.
Before starting the tournament, Princess Rylyn (or rather, Rylax) of Ealdormere, who was acting as patroness of the tourney, thanked all for attending, as well as those who had made prizes. During the year, the Axe Maidens (as well as others) make and collect amazing items to present to the participants of Estrogen and Axes, with the top three finishers (as well as some special award winners) getting first pick. Everyone who participates in this tournament is then permitted to pick a prize from the table.
THL Catriona inghen Ragnaill then explained the tournament. This year’s theme was “Baa Baa Black Sheep.” While a “stick” on any part of the butt gained the thrower one point, ten points could be scored by hitting any of the two sheep targets on the first butt, the bag of the wool on the second, or the specific bags of wool on the third, fourth, and fifth butts for the master, the dame, and the little boy in the lane. Fifty-three women took part in the throw, with Princess Rylax leading the way. She was later joined by her royal cousin, Princess Matilde of the East.
Support and camaraderie ruled this tournament. Loud cheering was heard for each “non-zero” score, as many who take part are not regular throwers. A certain Pennsic Independent editor by the name of Nicolaax was extremely happy with her score of 2. The marshals kept their eyes open for axes that landed in interesting ways, such as Countess Lidr’s upside down and backwards stick, or Alice’s axe that ended up stuck to the side of the butt, with the handle facing backwards. They were given first choice of the prizes once the winners received their picks.
The winner of the tournament was Baroness Rosheen from the Kingdom of Æthelmearc, with 47 points. Second place went to Mistress Dealla from the Kingdom of Atlantia with 27 points, and third place to Lady Dorothea from the Kingdom of Æthelmearc.

The Rapier Field Battle

By Clarice D’allaines
Rapier Reporter, Pennsic Independent

On a day where rain was predicted, but instead emerged bright and sunny, the battlefield was once again filled with fencers ready to charge. The Grand Alliance including Ealdormere, The Handsome Boys, The Calibers, and others was positioned at the top of the field, closest to the castle, and with southern teams packed at the bottom.
The Grand Alliance was estimated at 233 fencers and the Allied Kingdoms estimated about 200. With over 400 fighters on the field, yells and cheers (and many holds) were heard for all four battles. Dual tidy bowls of doom (a term indicating one side breaking the other side’s line, folding it over, making it tighter and tighter, and creating a death spot for those in the center) were seen in every battle,
A new adult fencer to the East kingdom, Kristen Singleman, said she “enjoyed killing everyone, and avenged her father’s death.” Go Kristen!
The Grand Alliance took all four battles, winning the War Point.
A special shout out to Lady Elena Hylton for the ice water soaked washcloths on the field today. Thank you, it saved many fencers from overheating.
